Passport renewal time?

I asked in another thread, but I think it got buried...and is a better question here anyway.

I applied for a new passport this week. It was delivered on Monday morning and is already in the State Dept system.

Has anyone renewed passports recently? How long did it take? I have just asked for standard service; the website says 4-6 weeks but I seem to remember a lot of people saying that the site always says that, but they got their passports back in 2-3 weeks.

Thoughts?

Unless you got some warrant out on your or something like that, i would say 3-4 weeks. Usually doesn't take that long. Also, I think there is a website to check the status of your application?

My wife renewed hers last month using the standard service and got it back in less than 3 weeks, which was a huge surprise, as when I renewed mine in 2005, it look nearer to 6 weeks.

Cool, thanks for the info.

@jaesun - yes, there is a website. It just says my application is in the system and they are processing applications in 4-6 weeks.

yeah, it isn't exactly the most up to date system. Hell, I put it on par with USPS "tracking" it basically tells you it is in the system, then, tells you it is done.

it should be quick though. my bro got his passport in 2.5 weeks a couple months ago.

Here's a recent thread showing renewals by mail completed and received in less than three weeks.

The 4-6 weeks is to give them wiggle room. It should be 2-3 weeks in general. Of course, if you're leaving within 2 weeks, you can always go down and get your passport same day or next day....

Thanks for the info - I just filled out my renewal earlier this week and got my new photos last night. My biggest fear (and hope) is that as soon as I send my old passport in - my job will ask me to travel somewhere. (I want to do more international travel for work - that's not the problem - I just worry about murphy's law & timing)

Yes, thanks for the info, y'all.

Hoyaheel - if something comes up and you have to travel, I think you can contact them to get your passport faster.

Your company may have a deal with an expediter to get it turned around in a day or two, many companies do. If it's a concern, it may be worth asking.

We can do that with visas when they're for work related trips, but not for the passports themselves. And since I don't currently have work travel booked, it's all on me. I'll just hope for the best case scenario in a timely return^ (my current passport expires in August, so I sort of waited as long as I could before renewal....) I'm just wishfully hoping/joking that the temporary loss of use will lead to me needing to take a trip^

just renewed 2 passports. Mine took 2 weeks and my wife took 3 weeks even though mailed applications on same day. Wife's probably would have taken longer if we did not call to complain. We were told it was being put in the mail as we spoke.

As an expat, I took my paperwork to the US Consulate this week, and they said they will have my new passport back in about 5 days.

I still have a year on my existing passport, but it has two sets of extra pages and everything is almost full. Even though their guidelines only ''recommend'' no more than two sets of extra pages the Consulate here interprets that as an absolute prohibition of any more sets.

Just renewed mine. Have solid plans to leave the country in about six weeks, so used expedited service for peace of mind. Had my new passport in hand in 11 days.

Wife and kids did theirs in October, and received their new passports in 11 days.
