Bolding mine.

Shouldn't that have been a flag?
Has anyone traveled overseas "empty" and planned to buy what you need "over there"?

Not "empty", as you put it, but with only hand baggage more than once.

Normally CLT crews for all the CLT trans-Atlantic flights and PHL crews for PHL trans-Atlantic flights. Since it's getting later in the month, if scheduling needed a reserve pilot for the eastbound flight and none were available in CLT they would pull one from PHL to fly the trip, or vice versa.

All the time. It's much easier than you'd think.

As for the woman, I smell false flag. First you have the "shoe bomber", and we have to take off our shoes. Then we have the "underwear bomber" just as the NOS are rolling out, and there's documented evidence that not only was he allowed on the plane by the US, he was escorted by a US official.

Now, mere weeks after TSA releases a statement expressing concern about surgically-implanted devices, this happens?

As for buying what I need "over there": I budget 1.34 euros for the wash-by-hand soap at the local Franprix. As it says on the box, you don't even need to scrub. Radiators do the rest.

All this said, as I once posted on the MAD security thread, I have been questioned at length based on suspicion of flying as an American with insufficient luggage and souvenirs.

The reality is they would have no function (unless it was to scare everyone) in this incident.

I haven't checked a bag in my last 500 flights or so, and there are at least three dozen international trips in there, many multi-week. Hasn't gotten me on any lists that I don't want to be on yet, as far as I know. Having a rollaboard and hand luggage, coupled with efficient packing and perhaps laundry done at the destination once or twice, can be fine.

If she had no luggage of any kind, then yeah, probably would be a flag, but I doubt there's much in the way of systems set up to track that. Certainly none that are apparent to me.

Know a few travelers from overseas who do come in with empty suitcases because they plan to shop in US. We are still the best place to buy most things.

Perhaps we'll all have to take a mental acuity test before boarding?

I can't remember the last time I checked a bag. Not just because it costs extra on many airlines, but because I like the flexibility travelling only with a rucksack brings, and the time saved by not waiting at baggage reclaim.

I did two weeks travelling the US west coast and three weeks around SE Asia (both from London) last year with just my trusty 55x45x25 rucksack, and it was great. However, without fail, I ALWAYS get questioned before boarding to the US as to why I don't have checked luggage, and three times now I've been stopped at customs upon arrival in the US (usually ORD) with the official finding it hard to believe I could be spending two weeks in the US without a suitcase.

I have also had the third degree in MAD prior to boarding the US flight to PHL, with various questions as to why I don't have luggage, why I'm visiting the Caribbean and then coming back etc.

It's a pain but what can you do?!

Beach vacations, I always buy t-shirts, flipflops, suncream etc. "over there". In my experience, there are very few beaches in the world where there isn't a touristy shop or market that sells 5 t-shirts for $20 or whatever. I give or throw them away before I leave.

No charges against the woman who caused the diversion.

It now seems like it was all just a "misunderstanding" -- nothing to do with bombs or anything.

Did no one speak French on the flight? Or is it just hard to understand a (possibly) crazy person?
