Update 08APR2014: Star Alliance Awards must have been booked by March 30, 2014. They are no longer available through US. This thread is mostly useful for historic purposes, and discussing issues such as schedule changes/route changes that affect FTers existing *A awards booked before 3/31/2014.

Discussion on using US miles to book oneworld awards is available here.

If you are looking for discussion on US's new partner awards that use various partners not in oneworld (many of whom are former *A partners), see the devoted thread on using US miles to book NON-oneworld partners here.

------------------------

Update 07JAN14: American Airlines award tickets bookable online on usairways.com or through reservation.

  • Award travel must be wholly on American Airlines or a combination of American Airlines and US Airways.
  • American Airlines awards cannot be combined with any of our current partner.
  • American Airlines award travel chart (PDF)

Please see the devoted thread on using US miles to book AA here.

I went ahead and put my first US Star Alliance award reservation on hold this morning...

4 J Tickets all on LH except for the first segment
SFO-ORD-FRA-ABV-PHC(Dest)-ABV-FRA(Stop)-SFO

This strange thing is that they let me book the FRA-SFO flight much further past the typical 334 days out. Its actually 337!

I was really excited they the agent was able to do this, but the problem is that in the last few days as well as right before she booked the FRA-SFO segment their had been 0 J seats available on CO.com and Aeroplan's websites?! The agent kept telling me the seats were there and I'm not one to complain about extra availability so I had her get the seats and place the reservation on hold. Now when I check usairways.com my reservation says status 'active' for every segment except this one which says its canceled? I called twice to ask about it but was told their is no problems?!

I will probably call and try to ticket this tomorrow but want to know if anyone has ever encountered anything like this before?

Question

So, I got a strange email from US this morning. It had the details of my upcoming flights which are departing in just under 3 weeks. The subject or body of the email didn't indicate any changes, but the first segment showed me departing on a later flight than originally booked - all the flights are on TG.

I checked my booking on the TG website and it still shows the original flight details all confirmed with seat numbers etc.

I called up TG and they had no idea why US would show me on the flight shown in the email. If I showed up for the flight US is showing in the email I'd have missed my ticketed flight by 5.5 hours!

I'm at a loss to understand how an automatically generated email could show me on a flight that I clearly don't have a reservation for...how bizarre does your IT have to be to create a situation like this?

I guess I should also call US and see what they say.

The MPM surcharges only apply to regular Fares.

For Award tickets, the rules of each FFP programme dictate the maximum MPM band permitted (but there are no surcharges). For example, AC AE allows MPM+5% and UA MP allows MPM+15%.

Well now I'm seriously hacked off!

I have spent all morning playing phone tennis between US and TG.

US are claiming that TG never confirmed the flights I booked 3.5 months ago. TG have no idea why they would say that and say the booking was A OK.

US have issued a ticket exchange against the PNR and now it seems I will lose the original bookings and will travel on less than ideal flights that US has been able to confirm O class inventory for. At the moment I have 6 flights showing up on my PNR for 4 segments...US also changed another one.

US will only deal with TG in Los Angeles who have closed for the day and will not speak to another office. By tomorrow I'm sure I will have lost the perfectly sound bookings for the flights I wanted and will be forced to travel on the flights US Airways would rather I did.

This is the most frustrating situation...seriously annoyed at US, how about picking the phone up and asking TG what's going on before you screw up my plans!

wow... is right!!

I hope they manage to work something out for you - but it looks like it might be too late is US has already tried to issue an exchange.

Can I just ask whether or not you contacted TG soon after making the reservation with US and asked specifically whether there were ticket numbers against your TG booking?

I have always used that tactic to ensure the integrity of the booking. I'm just wondering if that still holds true, or whether you had done that and still come with these issues?

I have always had a 037 ticket number, now I have 2!

I called up TG a couple of days after booking and selected seats.

I have to say the US supervisor I spoke to this morning was incredibly condescending - wouldn't matter what information I relayed from TG, US was right, no questions.

Yes, I don't hold out much hope of securing my original reservations.

Thanks for the reply... I know you had ticket numbers, but when you called thai to select seats, did you ask them 'have you got ticket numbers against this booking?' I'm just wanting, if possible, to have clarification of that specific step.

Following advice here on FT I always do that now and have run in to the problem where the airline did not, so the seat was going to be cancelled in their system.

All I can tell you is that when I spoke to Thai today they read out to me the original ticket number which was associated with my TG PNR. At that stage the PNR only showed the 4 original flights. At some point after my discussion with the US supervisor, the exchange seemed to be actioned, or begin to be actioned...I specifically asked her not to do anything, she laughed at me! The TG office here in Melbourne did not see the new ticket number against the booking but could pull up the details when I gave them the new number...they were heck of a confused by it all! Now the exchange seems to have moved on a step hence the 6 flights for 4 segments. By tomorrow I expect 4 again, 2 of which I don't like!

hmmm... that is confusing then. I'm now wondering if the original ticket number didn't get to TG in time and the seats auto cancelled? (but the PNR with those flights would have stayed in their system and be retrievable).

Maybe someone with ticketing experience might be able to shed light on this?

I'm not sure how that could be the case...no TG staff that I have spoken to can see any issue whatsover with the original booking and associated ticket. When I spoke to them at 9am today I think the exchange request was still queued up somewhere so the whole thing was untouched, and completely sound according to TG.

US stated that it never came back confirmed, ever, and that they tried to (long?) sell it and it never came back. O class availability was completely wide open on SYD-BKK flights as you probably know.

It seems like some kind of IT fail which I'm stuck in the middle of.

Some of my LH flights show being waitlisted on CO's site, but show confirmed at LH, but under two different LH records. I do not know if it is a LH or CO problem.

Yes - I have seen this as well. I have booked AC seats between 331-336 days out and they do not seem to display correctly on the US site. Some showed as being the correct month/day but wrong year (2011 instead of 2012) and another as "cancelled". On AC they all showed fine - once the ones which showed with the wrong year were within 330 days they displayed correctly; I'm still waiting for the flight showing as cancelled to fall within 330 to see if it also displays correctly.

Booking C class into Greece- do certain carriers ever offer SA awards?

Has anyone ever seen a Continental or Aegean flight available for star alliance rewards?

I look all the time and have never seen either.

Now, to find a creative way into Greece through LHR or FRA via AC or LH.

Fly from the US and connect in Europe

FRA/MUC/DUS/ZRH/GVA/IST/BRU/VIE/LIS/CPH all have C availability to ATH.

Couldn't find any on Aegean, so you'll just have to fly through a *A hub to connect.
