Update 08APR2014: Star Alliance Awards must have been booked by March 30, 2014. They are no longer available through US. This thread is mostly useful for historic purposes, and discussing issues such as schedule changes/route changes that affect FTers existing *A awards booked before 3/31/2014.

Discussion on using US miles to book oneworld awards is available here.

If you are looking for discussion on US's new partner awards that use various partners not in oneworld (many of whom are former *A partners), see the devoted thread on using US miles to book NON-oneworld partners here.

------------------------

Update 07JAN14: American Airlines award tickets bookable online on usairways.com or through reservation.

  • Award travel must be wholly on American Airlines or a combination of American Airlines and US Airways.
  • American Airlines awards cannot be combined with any of our current partner.
  • American Airlines award travel chart (PDF)

Please see the devoted thread on using US miles to book AA here.

Ah, now I see. Interestingly, a search via KVS is working fine.

Notes at the bottom of the ANA search page:

The Partner Flight Award search function is not available for passengers who do not have any mileage balance.

I guess any *A flight which you assign your ANA number is the way - but can you buy points or something like that?
Not that I'm aware of. Find a cheap IHG property, change your earning preference to ANA and book one night. I've got a Candlewood in Tempe showing $49.99.

This sucks. I just finished writing a python tool which queries ANA and lists the availability on the routes I want for date ranges I want. Had plans about making it public and usable for everyone, but if ANA is going to kill the functionality, I am unsure about spending my time developing this.

Access via KVS seems to work. Points can be transferred in from other programs like Amex Membership Rewards..

There's a workaround posted on the United forum - you can't miss it. It's obviously a loophole in the ANA code which may get plugged.

Also, transfer to ANA from AmEx is not supported for Australian issued cards - there may be other programs which can be used - more research needed.

Or, when you are at a Japanese airport, shop at duty free and get a few miles from an ANA shop! I've got 100 miles in my account, lucky me!

Or just credit a star alliance flight to ANA. I've got a 400 mile flight coming up that will go to my ANA account.

Just credited a past Hertz rental to ANA. Only worth 50 miles in any other FF program anyway.

SPG Platinums can transfer 1 SPG point into 1 ANA mile.

I am not sure if I can transfer SPG into another person's ANA account, but I'm willing to try sending 1 point to folks who need it (those who are not SPG plats and don't have another easy way to get a positive mileage balance in the ANA program).

I've transferred SPG into my daughter's US account. I would think it would be possible.

But yeah, getting locked out of the ANA tool is annoying.

Some programs work, some don't. I've tried a few and some have a last name match and some don't care about any match.

Wondering if it's worth 1500 SPG points (Gold level minimum). For now I'll wait for the hole to be plugged (KVS) and probably do a cheapo Candlewood or Holiday Inn this weekend, crediting to ANA.

I can understand your ambivalence. Should you proceed, I'm sure many of us would be very interested in it.
