US Airways has told its employees that the merger deal with United Airlines is off and there will be no effort to revive it, union leaders said yesterday.

The message was delivered Friday by US Airways President Rakesh Gangwal at a meeting with union officials at the airline's Arlington headquarters, which company sources confirmed. Gangwal told the union representatives that management will decide the airline's future at a special board meeting July 18.

He said management decisions will be made at that meeting regarding the airline's business plan, programs and goals, according to union leaders who attended.

The meeting with the unions came as industry analysts were saying that US Airways Chairman Stephen M. Wolf was left with two options: Sell the airline to its unions, as he had done with United Airlines in 1994, or break up the carrier and sell its parts. Wolf served as chairman of United until he sold the airline to its employees as part of an employee stock-ownership plan.

Officials of the machinists and pilots unions, which along with the flight attendants union and the Communications Workers of America represent 80 percent of the airline's 47,000 workers, said yesterday that they will try to keep US Airways operating independently.

Tom Buffenbarger, president of the International Association of Machinists, warned yesterday, "The demise of the United Airlines-US Airways merger should not signal the start of a going-out-of-business sale for US Airways." He said the airline can survive without a partner or a breakup.

US Airways Statement Regarding Merger With UAL Corp.

US Airways announced today that US Airways and UAL Corporation have provided the Department of Justice with the 21 days advance notice required to obtain a determination of its position on the pending merger. The parties continue to stand ready to address any questions that the Department of Justice and the state attorneys general may have in connection with the merger. There is no assurance, however, that the transaction can be consummated.

Yet, a year later, rumblings of a reprise of some kind:

"United Airlines and US Airways are close to code sharing deal that could provide both struggling carriers with benefits of last year's failed $12 billion merger without actually combining the two airlines, several sources familiar with the matter said..."

FWIW:

Pilots will now either approve or reject any acquisition of another carrier proposed by management.

Airline industry experts doubt any merger deals are likely soon, given the disastrous state of the industry's finances since the Sept. 11 attacks. But such a provision would relieve a sore spot after a merger deal between UAL Corp.'s(NYSE:UAL - News) United and No. 6 US Airways Group Inc.(NYSE:U - News) fell apart last year and left many workers angered at the wasted effort.

Pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, would also authorize a proposed code-share deal between United and US Airways, under the tentative deal. The two airlines are reportedly close to sealing such an arrangement, which generates revenues when each airline is allowed to put its code on the other's fares in computer reservation systems.

Oh no. Everyone LIKES Doc digging up old threads. He said so himself! We ASKED for him to do this! He conducted a secret survey of EVERYONE on FT and the overwhelming response was to keep digging up threads to make an update. To HELL with anyone who does not like it. Remember, this is FlyerTalk for Doc, and we are just visitors!

What a joke. But, it seems that FT does not care so we are left with the problem.

Oh well....
