The Random Upgrades in the MP Statement
Please forgive me if this topic has been beaten to death (I'm new to the board) but can anyone explain to me the real (as opposed to the stated) policy on the upgrades in the MP statement. Sometimes they are 500 or 1000 mile certs; sometimes one-way upgrades. No matter what they are there never seems to be a relationship between miles flown and the amount of upgrades.
I'm a 1K (on segments, not miles, so I do a lot of short hops) but I fly roughly the same amount each month. My statements have ranged from zero upgrades to a record of 3 4x500 mile books AND 6 one way upgrades.
Anyway, any info would be appreciated.

I'm a Premier member and I'm just as confused. I just got my second statement in as many weeks. Each statement had a book of four upgrades in it. The statements both had the exact same activity, but I won't complain! Bring me a statement every day!

What is important is - how many miles does the statement say you have flown. If the statement shows you crossing a 10K mile boundary (flown on United, Express, Shuttle) then you should get 4 500 mile certs for each multiple of 10K crossed during that statement (and partner airlines do not count). One way certs for 1K members are mailed quarterly I believe based on activity.

Pgupta is correct on the 500 mile certs. You should look and see how many miles your statment shows you flew for that period. That determines how many 500 mile certs you receive with the statement.
The 1K confirmable certs are mailed after the end of each quarter. As a 1K you receive 2 per quarter and 2 additional certs if you fly more than 10K miles in that quarter. I think I got that one right. I know that I get four one way certs per quarter and I fly around 25K miles per quarter.

I called to complain recently since I've received hardly any certs this year even though I've flown over 160,000 miles on UA to date. They said they'd send me out some certs and today I received 4 books of 500 miles certs and 4 confirmed NA upgrades.
But if the above post from pgupta011 is correct, I should have received 16 books of 500 mile upgrades so far plus I don't know how many NA upgrades.
Oh well, what I really need is more Intl upgrades for next year.

Last time I called to complain about the lack of upgrades forthcoming, the MP rep said that 1K's were entitled to 1 "set" of confirmed upgrades every quarter in which their total travel exceeded 10,000 miles.
It was unclear how many confirmed upgrades comprised a "set," but she did say that you should get one in a quarter, regardless of how many miles over 10,000 you earned - that the mechanism was unlike the OW UG KIT coupons.
Call another person, get another answer. Keep trying until you hear the answer you like.

Bulletin for JGill: The moon appears the same size as the sun, not the Earth. If you were about 40,000 miles from the moon, for example, on the way towards the Earth, the moon and the Earth would appear to be the same size.

RichG....but only if you have a window seat in coach (because UA didn't get you upgrade certs in time).

I am soooo hurt that some people doubt my veracity re: the one way certs.
The max per quarter is 4 confirmable one-way certs for 1Ks. I am also confident that you automatically get 2 certs per quarter and if you fly >10K miles in that quarter you get the two additional certs. This is in addition to however many sets of 4-500 mile certs you earn that quarter.

I'm sure you're right but when I complained of not getting any upgrades for 6 months, MP sent me lots of 500 miles but told me that I cannot have the confirmable ones as they're tightly audited and so cannot be sent out just because United forgot to send me the certs !
There we go - hopefully I'll have better luck next quarter.
