Nonsense. London, Frankfurt, Madrid, Amsterdam secondary cities? Small network of flights? Compared to whom?

I am no fan of US Airways having deserted them for UA last year. But this statement is just wrong. The TATL routes along with stronger presence in NE and SE US are major upsides for UA in an acquisition.

hear, hear!

After having about 65K miles confiscated last year by US (the PC word is "forfeited"), I'm not going near that carrier again! I couldn't even use the miles because I could never get the FF seat that was available.

I'd take my chances with CO.

UA and Useless Scareways in "very advanced" talks

Now running on the Associated Press wire service ... we'll see what comes of this:

AP source: United, US Airways in 'very advanced' combo talks
Eds: APNewsNow. Will be led.
By DAVE CARPENTER
AP Business Writer
CHICAGO (AP) - A person close to the negotiations says United
Airlines and US Airways are in very advanced talks and expect to
announce within two weeks that they are combining.
The two carriers have stepped up their talks after Continental
Airlines caught United off guard by deciding not to pursue a deal
with the Chicago-based carrier.
The source asked Monday not to be named because of the sensitive
nature of the talks.
A United spokeswoman has not immediately responded to a request
for comment.
A US Airways spokesman says the carrier does not comment on
rumors or speculation about consolidation.

A merger with US would give me enough time to burn my miles before moving to another carrier.

As long as US Hubs, employees, aircraft, call centers, policies, and Dividend Miles are eliminated by this merger, I'm fully in favor.

Whoever this "person close to the negotiations" is, they aren't very reliable.

Last week, IIRC, they were saying the VERY SAME THING w/r/t UA and CO.

Don't hold your breath, folks.

YUCK

The choices and remember death is not an option:
1) UA Management
2) US Management

I think I just threw up in my mouth

And it was true. If you read the text, it says they expect to announce.

You forgot about:

- Reduced pitch in both Y AND F
- Reeduced mileage bonuses for Silver (50% -> 25%), Gold (100% -> 50%) & Platinum (100% -> 75%) Preferred.
- Segments under 500 miles will now earn actual miles flown. Kinda gives a new meaning to "Prince of Pain" for segment runners who fly up and down the Northeast corridor on RJ's.

if this were to happen, i wonder what would happen with BOS, LGA, PHL, IAD, DCA, and CLT. personally, the slots at DCA are attractive, as is the shuttle flights.

since i'm right next to DCA, this would certainly increase the options for me. i wouldn't mind.

I somehow see those No Dutta Goodwin stickers coming out of storage and finding their way onto the walls at OHare.

Living in PHX and absolutely hating TED, I can say that there is only once (airline) thing that I hate more then TED....US AIR.

If US/UA merge this TED flying GS MM member will jump over to either AA or CO, but there is no chance I'll stay with the merged UA/US airline.

I'm just hoping this is just another case of the reporters creating news rather than reporting on it.
