Yes. Yes. Yes.

I flew 6 segments in 12 hours last year to qualify, and fortunately this year I'll be qualified by the end of Nov. A few extra segments and connections along the way helped. I've flown ONT-LAX and SNA-LAX or the reverse seven times this year.

Hard value of 1K

When I'm considering an MR, I calculate the value of the trip based on what a 1K earns for traveling 100k miles in a year:
  • 200,000 redeemable miles
  • 40 500-mile upgrades: equivalent of 100,000 RDMs (in my book)
  • 8 CR-1s: equivalent of 120,000 RDMs (if you travel at least 10k/quarter)
  • 6 SWUs: equivalent of 180,000 RDMs
  • Total: 100,000 BIS = 600,000 RDMs
In other words, every mile I travel is worth 6 times what it would be if I had no status at all (i.e., if I travel on some other carrier). If you set a value of 1 RDM = 2 cents (I do), then for a 1K, 1 BIS = 12 cents. A 1P gets the first two items listed, which makes a mile traveled worth half of what it is for a 1K.

This is in addition to the RCC discount, no charge for award travel changes, and the other benefits mentioned by many in this thread. For me, the value of each BIS mile traveled is enough to make it worth the stretch.

Only if you got your card before October 2006. If you got your card after that, they'll only waive $60 of the fee.

Is this based on if you went Platinum Class before October 2006, or if you had the card (regardless of Platinum or not) before 2006? For example, I've had my MP Visa forever, but it was 'upgraded' to Platinum after October 2006.

Is 1k Worth $800?

I can reach United 1k status this year by paying about $700-800 for an 11,000 mile trip (only reason I would take this trip is to reach 1k). I've read the United info re the benefits of 1k status, but want to know if people think it's worth it--in other words, would you pay $700-800 to reach that status?
Thanks

I think a lot of people here would say absolutely yes, if not just for the six SWUs you get.

Yes!

Last year I decided it was worth $1,400. And I still think it is.

If you're going to fly a lot next year and take advantage of 1K, then yes, absolutely. If not, why bother?

Depending on where you're flying from and time constraints, I think you could do better than $800 for 11,000 miles. Check out the Mileage Run forum for many examples.

Spending $640 to do just that, BWI-ORD-MUC, this Friday-Sunday. I think its worth it since I do almost all transcons. Also, my only chance in years to make 1K.

Well, I am not in the same shoes as most of you are, but I would say it's a great deal, given the many benefits that 1K status gives you for the next year!

Thanks for the feedback. re the issue of how many miles I'll fly next year, guessing it will probably only be 50-60k, so most likely back to Premr Exec.
