I have a trip next month with this segment...why the recommendation? Something I should be looking forward to?

its being recommended because of no risk of misconnect.

In December, 77Qs operated 50% of the SEA-NRT flights.

On first reading, it seemed like there was something unique about this particular UA leg.

FWIW, I fly ex-west coast to NRT all the time and would definitely take the UA direct. Keep in mind SEA->NRT is doing 50-60% in the new config based on the latest stats in another thread. I'd try (although it's damn difficult) to align to the new config and you'll be all set.
Is Asiana lie flat? Even if so, I'd stick with UA. Their C food is crap, but I don't find Asiana to be anything special.
If this was an NH vs UA discussion, it'd be a different story altogether, but they'd both be direct! Incidentally, NH will be flying SEA->NRT in 2012! I bet UA puts the new config on that route a lot more after that begins...

If OZ is using A330's as mentioned above, then it will have the slanted flat seat in C. Only some OZ 777's have the QS full flat seats.
If OP does take OZ, dress in layers as I find their cabins to be extremely warm.
