United.com Website Problem

(Hoping this is the correct forum for this post.)

Newbie here at FlyerTalk and having a problem with a page at United.com; hoping someone with more computer knowledge than me (which is just about everyone) can help. The page I’m having problems with is the “email us” page of the Customer Service pages.

On the United.com website, when I click on Customer Service I get the appropriate webpage. When I click on “email us” (the middle of the 5 tabs near the top of the page) I either get the appropriate page not at all or for a second before I end up with a page that is mostly blank and has a drop down menu box that when I click on one of the choices, nothing happens. I’ve already deleted all the UA cookies (about the limit of my computer skills) and re-tried, but no change.

This is important as last fall I emailed United Customer Solutions (about some problems I had when traveling with a companion) via their website on a computer at work and received a quick reply, to which I replied via regular email and after a few emails back and forth I received 2 $125 e-certificates. I no longer have access to a computer at work and a week ago I emailed them via the same regular email address as the exchange last fall and did not get a reply. I was traveling a few days ago and used a hotel computer to email the exact same message via the website and I received a reply within 1 day along with a $250 e-certificate.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

The e-mail function works fine for me. Is your browser compatible with UA's website?

"The United Airlines web site is best accessed with one of the following web browsers:
Mozilla/Firefox 3.6 or newer
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer
Google Chrome 6 or newer
Safari 5.0 or newer (Macintosh)
Disabling browser functions such as Javascript, cookies or SSL may cause certain functionality to be unavailable."

UAs website uses JavaScript to display the correct form based on what you select in the drop down menu. It sounds like something is keeping the JavaScript from running properly. Its hard to say more without some more information. What browser are you using?

Thank you all very much. Using Internet Explorer (only browser I’ve ever used) Version 8.0.6001.18702.

I’ve just confirmed that the following settings are in place on my computer:

Click ‘Tools’ on the menu bar’
Select ‘Internet Options’
Click the ‘Security’ tab
Click the ‘Custom Level’ button
Scroll to the ‘Scripting’ section
Select ‘Enable’ to enable whichever JavaScript activities you want to work.

Default settings:

Scripting
__Active scripting
____Enable
__Allow Programatic clipboard access
____Prompt
__Allow status bar updates via script
____Disable
__Allow websites to prompt for information using scripted window
____Disable
__Enable XSS filter
____Enable
__Scripting of Java applets
____Enable

In the Advanced tab of ‘Internet Options’, “Use SSL 2.0” and “Use SSL 3.0” are both checked.

Still no joy, gonna keep trying! Thanks again.

Hmmm. I don't use IE, so I'm not that familiar with it. I don't see anything that jumps out to me as wrong. Perhaps someone more familiar with IE can suggest something?

For now, your best bet may be to use another browser to get off the island so to speak. I do the same thing with my Mac. I use Firefox for most things, but keep Safari around just in case something doesn't work. I would suggest using either Firefox or Chrome as a "backup browser" until you figure out what is keeping .bomb from working with IE. Both of these browsers are very popular, and you may discover that you like one more than IE.

At this point, its also worth suggesting you make sure you have run the Windows system update recently. This will make sure you have the latest version of Java installed.
