The plot thickens.
Have called 3 times now and had 2 different supervisors look at it. Cannot be done. ALWAYS pulls from one account only. They even tried having one of us guest the other. They are all absolutely confused by this but explained that with the merging of 2 computing systems they are starting to see some bizarro stuff crop up. Put a note in the United field and asked that I call back during times when UA MP "Cert experts" are on call for them.

If you are within 24 hours, you can cancel and rebook if inventory and fare are still available.
Other ideas offered with no warranty:
1. ask for a supervisor to approve splitting the PNRs. They cannot do so automatically with a codeshare but if the inventory is available (or [harder] the supervisor gets it), the supervisor could authorize a new booking for the second passenger that matches the fare.
2. Ask mileage plus (preferably with a reservation supervisor's blessing) to cancel SWU from one account and add SWU to the other account so both pax can be upgraded.

United UDU - traveling with non-elite companion: better to separate reservations?
I'll be traveling United several times this year with a non-elite companion. I'm United Premier. I realize my chances of early upgrades are relatively low.
However, if we're on the same reservation, will United upgrade me only if there are two seats available (i.e. they won't separate us?). If that's the case, would I have a better chance of being upgraded ahead of time by separating our reservations into two confirmation numbers (as is required by CO on their flights)? I realize chances of two 1st class seats opening on these smaller planes is small, so just trying to maximize my chances.
Thanks!

If you want to have a shot at upgrading yourself without your companion then you definitely need to be on a separate PNR. But that means the companion will never be able to upgrade without using an instrument to support.

Just curious, what is the route, and type of aircraft (and flight and date would be really good to know).

All are small planes with about 6-12 first class seats. My non-elite companion never has checked baggage, so that's not a problem actually.
How do I go about splitting the reservation -- can I do it online or do I have to call? (I know CO has a way of splitting travelers online)
thanks

Thanks for the replies. The soonest routes now are ORD-EWR, ORD-ABQ, ORD-LGA

Minor on a separate PNR?
Can a minor be on a PNR on his/her own, other than being an unaccompanied minor? TIA.
