In the past you could sponsor each upgrade from a different account. I think they had to request the upgrades only (no certificates) and then individually attach the upgrade authorizations. The new combined process might not permit these steps (or maybe an expert can manipulate the bookings).

If you are within 24 hours, you can cancel and rebook if inventory and fare are still available.

Other ideas offered with no warranty:

1. ask for a supervisor to approve splitting the PNRs. They cannot do so automatically with a codeshare but if the inventory is available (or [harder] the supervisor gets it), the supervisor could authorize a new booking for the second passenger that matches the fare.

2. Ask mileage plus (preferably with a reservation supervisor's blessing) to cancel SWU from one account and add SWU to the other account so both pax can be upgraded.
