I cancelled several reservations in which a +Pts upgrade was requested, and also applied some +Pts that were not cleared. No +Pts were deducted for these flights of course, so no harm was done. But the number showing in "Pluspoints requested" only increases, it never decreases. This so even thought the cancelled and unsuccessful flights are all now past. Is "+Pts requested" behave like entropy?

Give it a few days... the requested points should disappear.

The deducted points are sometimes returned immediately after you cancel the flights. But you will have to call MP to get them back after 2-3 days if they are not. I spent more than 30 min to get points back on five itineraries. The points on one itinerary was returned immediately when MP, 1K agent and I had a three-way call.
Good luck.

There's no need to do anything about points that only appear in the Requested column. You can have as many points Requested as you want. The system will allow your Requested points to exceed your total.

Based on the varied questions/responses here and other related threads, United has managed to create confusing upgrade and elite-status-attainment structures all in the name of ostensibly giving their frequent flyers more opportunities. I cannot even fathom the internal conversations that gave rise to such a mess. Personally, I won't be surprised if there is a sizable drop in 1K numbers come 2021. With Scott Kirby set to become CEO in May, I can only expect further deterioration of Mileage Plus benefits. I find my 28-years of United loyalty is rapidly eroding.

Something funny is going on. Requested upgrade using 20 PP SFO-BOS tomorrow. It says waitlisted.

However, when I looked at the PNR, no upgrade is waitlisted.

Then I checked PP balance, it says none is requested. What's going on?

While there's a lot of learning to do in the new system - I haven't actually found it to be that difficult to understand once you encounter 3-4 scenarios that couldn't occur under the old scheme.

I value the flexibility they've added - like using upgrades on deep-discount economy tickets (below W fares). I could almost never get my GPU's to clear in the old scheme as a 1K and found the W-fare restriction frustrating so new system is a big positive in general. Doubt it will be a reason to cull 1K's and there's still benefits over DL/AA systems. Of course my opinion has also improved due to the flexibility GS has with PlusPoints though that's only temporary as I doubt I'll maintain GS status next year given corona virus related travel reductions this year.

Did you click all the way through? You have to acknowledge the total and indicate that you actually want to join the waitlist.

Of course.

Otherwise it won't give you the page saying you are on the waitlist already.

But it's not.

I would call about it - saw something similar on a reservation and they re-requested. Ironically when it cleared, the points still showed as waitlisted, I kept the upgraded seat and the points redeposited into my account after the trip.

Just called GS line and got 20 PP requested.

Unfortunately, J is full. It doesn't matter now unless some pax don't show up.

Yesterday I was informed by United that a requested upgrade into Polaris cleared on an upcoming flight at the end of the month. :)

However, it is for a work trip to FCO that I will almost certainly be instructed to cancel. (I'm a little confused as to why I haven't already been told to do so.) Will I get my PlusPoints back for an already-cleared upgrade should I cancel the trip? This may well have been answered upthread, but I didn't see it.

In almost any other circumstance, I'd be pretty excited about the upgrade (though it would not be the most important of the upgrade-eligible legs on this itinerary). :(

Yes. If you cancel a trip with a cleared upgrade, the PlusPoints are returned. I'd say it's about 50/50 whether or not it happens automatically, though, so keep an eye on your balance and write in if necessary.

Ah, that's a relief. Thanks for the quick reply! I'll be sure to report back if anything does not go nominally.

Yes, you are right....KEEP AN EYE ON WHAT'S BEING REFUNDED!!!

Be aware that if that upgrade was applied and confirmed prior to PP conversion (ie using RPU or GPU), once it is redeposited - the expiry date might show as 31/01/2020 (in the past) and then actually expire the next day - even though the original upgrade instrument taken out had an expiry date of 31/01/2021. This has happened to me TWICE. I had to call in and talk to a MileagePlus agent to get both back.
