I don't think I follow. How do you know the person was cleared but not checked in? There is only an aggregate checked-in count for those confirmed in J/F, not individual markings for each person on the list. So is it that you know the actual person, and you see the name, and you know otherwise the person was not checked in? But you're not sure if the person bought up? Or I am totally misinterpreting the question? 😵

This is a very common issue on CPU and non-CPU routes. Even 1Ks like me who get an advanced CPU at T-96 should not appear on the upgrad list. But at some point within 24 hours (and usually only on the day of departure) we show up with our seat assignment on the list. There's no explanation for this.

That is my experience too — upgrade before 24h or any time into PN, disappear from list.

That's how it normally works but plenty of cases of a name appearing on the upgrade list the day of departure after an advanced upgrade. This has happened to me several times and I still have no logical explanation for it. I never changed the ticket, etc. Weird indeed.

Are we talking about the same app? The United app has had a "checked in" marker for the upgrade list which applies to both those who have been and those who haven't been upgraded yet.

See above. That's normal operation but the random pop-up of someone on the list who was upgraded ahead of T-24h seems to be happening more frequently. It's happened to me on two flights now in the past month. Both domestic CPU routes.

Ah, actually we weren't. I was describing the website display. But now I notice the app does have a check mark for everyone, both cleared and waitlisted. Mea culpa!

Why not eligible for upgrade?
 
Booked a flight mainland USA-HNL on a 777-200 with Mrs. IMissThe747 and our infant in arms. I thought I'd add some PlusPoints just for kicks. But, the website/app says the reservation is not eligible for upgrade. I'm not sure why this would be. Any ideas? Something to do with the 777-200 dorm-style biz class and infant-in-arms? Something about HNL? Something at the IT update?

Others have reported this, seems to have started with the IT update. Book the flight and then try the upgrade request afterwards. If that does not work, calling has fixed it for others.

Here is an example. You’ll see people showing that they’ve been upgraded (the ones with seat assignments). However not everyone has a “checked-in” check next to them. What I’ve observed is the ones with a seat assignment but not checked in showing up out of nowhere. The theory that they were buy-ups at checkin would mean that they had checked in, so it is a different set of customer.

Thanks for the example — as it turns out, I had not noticed the app has a different display than the website (see above posts). I don't know the explanation for that observation.

Beyond the list mysteries, there are also choices contrary to procedure GAs make that cause #1 (or #2 or #3) not to be upgraded. For example:
  • SFO to BWI, I was at gate and GA started calling out names at T-45. I quickly realized she was calling out names on the UG list. After only one person ahead of me answered her 7 calls, I was called, she asked me if I wanted the CPU, and then got the last CPU at #8 on the list. I’m sure any 1k/Plat/Gold in the UC was pissed off to watch that happen (I was silver at the time)
  • Recent DCA to EWR, GA showed up really early (I was also running early) and processed all upgrades first thing. She skipped the passenger not checked in yet (at #2 on the list) and I once again got the last CPU.
Fortunately for me (I guess), because I have never made it passed Gold, I can only benefit from GA shenanigans.

United website was giving me all sorts of errors while checking in yesterday. The app too. I didn't get precheck and it took re-adding my KTN a few times to finally get PreCheck on my boarding passes.

Today, my itinerary is BOS-EWR-ABE. The BOS-EWR flight posted with yesterday's date. The EWR-ABE bus leg (sold as United Express operated by Landline) hasn't credited at all, although it looks like it might be because someone forgot to mark the bus as arrived (app still shows me as en route)

Had a M+ agent on the line, who stated that staff is struggling with the new system with many of them working huge amounts overtime, including 6 days a week.
