If those names showing cleared now were not on the list at all previously, most likely explanation they are buying up at check-in. For some reason the system may display those as cleared upgrades, which is rather confusing.
How many such names have appeared? Good luck. |

When I’ve seen people show up on the list that were not previously listed, they don’t have the checked in mark. So if they did in fact do a buy-up at checkin, wouldn’t they have the mark?

fumje - I did ask the GA when 6 people had cleared and she said that "nobody had cleared and that I was #1 on the list. I showed her the upgrades on the app and she shrugged. They called about 6 names at the gate to give them paper boarding passes, so I'm not inclined to think these are paid upgrades.
kb1992 - exact same scenario as your screenshots show. Probably best for my sanity to simply keep the app/website closed (not refresh maniacally) and see if they hand a paper upgrade while boarding. For this thread's sake, the app and the website mostly mirrored each other during these events. The upgrade shenanigans thread might be more relevant, but it does feel like something changed with the most recent IT update as my experience with the upgrade list integrity had been pretty reliable. |

When I have bought up, I'm removed from the waitlist altogether and the # of seats booked changes. Almost positive that's how it works across the board.
I have personally seen examples of names showing cleared after buying up. There are also reports here from people who've had buy up result in name showing cleared. What I don't know is why it happens or when, since it doesn't always (obviously didn't for your case). |

The paper BPs at the gate are more often standby passengers rather than a slew of upgrades. But it does surprise me that there could be so many buy-ups, and especially that 2. and 3. would buy up when (I think) there were still 3 seats left, so I agree everything doesn't necessarily seem right. I guess you didn't wind up clearing in the end? 😒😞
Due to strict COVID protocol by PRC government, all pax must take 2 PCR tests at different labs in past 48 hours prior to boarding. All pax must obtain blue health code by PRC Consulate in SFO. It is impossible to check in without these documents. Without a valid ticket you can't get health code. GA cleared No.2 and 3, but left No.1 died on WL. Should he complain to UA? |

In the case I was referring to, Oct. 2 SFO-PVG UA 857, there is no standby pax.

Why do you say that?

Why do I say that I'm "almost positive" about that? Because it's happened every time I've bought up, without exception. I just did it this morning and watched my name go from #2 on the list to off the list, and the # of F go up by 1. Maybe things are different *after* check-in? Why would the system treat it differently by individual? Wouldn't make sense, just from a software POV.

Known bug: changes to award tickets

Seems to still be the case. I'm trying to change a US-Europe award ticket with LH segments, and the search page (from "change flights") says "no results found". But a de novo search (as if booking new ticket) shows availability. Frustrating, the ability to change award tickets on the app/site was one of the best features.
Ah. It took me a minute to make the connection, but I think this is what caused my problem as well (described below). In my case, it was not me but United that was trying to "change" my award reservation by assigning a new flight number to one of the segments.

. . . .My issue is that I have an (international, award) itinerary on hold via FareLock, but I am unable to pull it up via "My Trips" on the website. The trip is showing, but when I click on view/manage itinerary I just get a blank page . . . it now appears that the "unavailable" segment is due to a change of flight number, and that we have in fact been confirmed on the new flight, which is encouraging. But still can't pull up or finalize this purchase on the website.

The upgrade list has two sections, one for cleared and one for waitlisted. When names are on the upgrade waitlist (i.e. not yet upgraded), they do have or don't have a check mark corresponding to checked in or not checked in. After names go to the 'cleared' section, they only show a seat assignment and no check mark. Under normal circumstances the only names showing cleared are those that have actually cleared by CPU or instrument. The confusing thing is that sometimes buy-ups also go into the 'cleared section'. So once a name shows cleared, you really can't tell how it got there.

Found another bug in case someone is tracking these from or on behalf of UA.
Booked a coach one-way yesterday TPA-EWR ($99 in Y vs $1,479 in F), applied +points. I previously posted about an error I got with the +points search, with picking E+ seats as 1k. Today, I checked the website for any buy-up offer and it was $199, so I took it obviously since this route is almost ALWAYS full in first. I checked out with my purchase and click the "select my seats" button. My old E+ seat is still shown and when I pick a seat in F and "save", it sends me to a check-out page to pay the $199 again. I already got my receipt via email from the purchase so I close the window, go back to the home page, click "my trips" and go to the itinerary. Seat 1A was auto chosen for me, so I click that and it takes me again to the seat map where I move it to what I want, and it saves without issue. It's truly crazy how many things have gone wrong with this "upgrade".... I'm sure UA will sort it out -- I think their site and app is/was excellent. But, wow... |

Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I’ve seen instances where people showed up on the cleared upgraded list (aka seat assignment) but not checked in and names were previously not on the list. FWIW, this was for a non-CPU route.

This is a very common issue on CPU and non-CPU routes. Even 1Ks like me who get an advanced CPU at T-96 should not appear on the upgrad list. But at some point within 24 hours (and usually only on the day of departure) we show up with our seat assignment on the list. There's no explanation for this.

This "upgrade" appears to have disabled all opportunity to use expert mode on united.com.
