Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

Change is here. Change fees are gone. We’re permanently getting rid of change fees for most Economy and premium cabin tickets for travel within the United States. This includes Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Learn more

For all other destinations, change fees are waived through December 31, 2020. See terms and conditions
We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

This policy change will automatically appear, but it may not be reflected everywhere right away. We’d appreciate your patience as we work to make that happen.
Award flight redeposit fees waived

We’re waiving redeposit fees for award flights issued on or before December 31, 2020, that are canceled at least 30 days before the departure date. You can also change your award flight with no fee. Learn more about changing or canceling your award flight.

I am with you. However, I am strictly commenting the restoration of these line items during the period of just before and right after - if a base fare has remained the same on December 31, and also on January 1 (and beyond), assuming same fare rules, then it should not be considered as fare increases; airlines are collecting these line items on behalf of the government, from the passenger and payable to the appropriate agency - e.g. IRS, US Treasury.

I am not commenting on the merit of these items.

As you predicted, the 1600 flight EWR-SFO on the 787-10 along with the hourly scheduled departures are no more. Our re-accommodation option is on the 1440 flight that is listed as a 777-200. The other flights of the day are a 0615 757-200, an 0830 787-10, and an 1815 787-9. I assume as 1440 is within the two hour window of 1600 there would be little way of cancelling and that the schedule is pretty much set now. There are no seat maps available yet, however I would assume the only way to have the largest chance of the new Polaris would be to change to the 787-10 at 0830. It is much earlier in the day (tight connection from our Amtrak train) and would serve breakfast, however I take it the 777-200 would be a domestic unless there was a swap and the 787-9 is a toss up?

This would have been a safe bet prior to the schedule change, as I firmly believe we are still months away before UA bringing back its hourly nonstop schedule for flights between EWR and LAX/SFO. To its credit, UA has been operating 4x/daily (increasing to 6x/daily when factoring JFK) throughout much of last year, with flights scattered throughout the day; this is one of the reasons I have been flying more on UA over its competitors.

I don't see any domestic 777s on EWR-SFO in February. WIll likely be Polaris-equipped 777-200ER, and lots of flights scheduled as 772 have ended up operating with 77W over the past few months.

LAX-EWR seems to be holding at 4 flights daily; two of them on mostly 781s, with a 77W on some days, and a 789 on a few.

The February wipeout is apparently loaded. SFO-HKG now "resumes" 3/04. ORD-HKG (weekly) now 3/07. EWR-HKG remains 3/26.

Those flights / routes have not been updated yet for March is a better way of viewing this.

Just noticed that there is not a single, non-stop flight between CVG and EWR on Sundays anymore this month.

Had you intended to fly that route this month on a Sunday/Sundays?

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.
