Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

I believe you mean DEN-SFO-KOA.

A cash refund, if UA operates the flight, might be difficult to get. You can cancel with no cancellation fee and receive a UA credit, good for 2 years, called an Electronic Travel Credit, an ETC, You would have up to 2 years to make a new booking which could be up to a year later. Almost 3 years.

Under UA present policies, you do not qualify for a cash refund.

HOWEVER, UA is seeking permission to cancel KOA flights. That should be known in a week or so, and then you would qualify for a cash refund.

I suspect the best bet for you is to take a travel credit from UA and use it for a future flight to Hawaii. Unless the route is cancelled I don’t think you can get a refund. What’s happening with your hotels?

Thank you. Do we wait until just before the departure date to take a voucher? And will we have to navigate the long distance/long wait time telephone switchboard?

Hotels are closed, so can't go regardless.

I believe you just have to call in to get the credit. I don’t know if it can be done online, as I’ve not had anything to cancel recently, but others can chime in.

Note that as a new member you are limited to five posts today, so make them count (or edit a previous post).

OP is entitled to a refund. This is not a change, but rather the cancellation of his nonstop and an offer of rebooking on another service. The cancellation means that he is eligible for a refund,under DOT's rules. While one ought to read the rules as summarized in DOT's April 3, Warning Letter to UA (and other carriers), the operative language could not be more clear:

"U.S. and foreign airlines remain obligated to provide a prompt refund to passengers for flights to, within, or from the United States when the carrier cancels the passenger’s scheduled flight or makes a significant schedule change and the passenger chooses not to accept the alternative offered by the carrier. "

UA may well deny the refund, but this is a relatively cut & dried chargeback on OP's credit card and should also be the subject of a DOT complaint (online and easy to complete).

When submitting the chargeback, include:
1. E-ticket receipt showing original nonstop routing.
2. Cancellation / rebooking notice showing new routing.
3. Note that UA has refused a refund even though it cancelled the flight.

However no one has reported the success of this approach. UA will claim this is a standard schedule change as has been done for years.

There is no reason to go back and forth on this again here as there is extensive discussion elsewhere. For now, until the DOT rules specifically on if this is a legit schedule change or refundable incident, this situation has no clear answer. The same goes for the chargeback approach.

In my experience, award tickets have been effortless to cancel. In most situations, human interactions have been optional. Miles redeposit in the instant after mouse click, and taxes/fee refund to original payment within 2 days or so.

Paid tickets - entirely different story.

I think the KOA flights will be canceled next week. Talked to local folks that work for the contractor that runs ground ops for UA here. Direct service looks like a goner very soon. Once they force you to HA, the change in carrier makes the refund straightforward. A more challenging approach if they don't cancel KOA service is the DEN-KOA were lie flats and the SFO-KOA is 737 with no lie flat.

Beleive this will depend on the outcome of the CARES service waiver that UA has requested from the DOT. DOT may deny or grant a total or partial waiver.

Just offering a data point.

On December 4 I booked PHL-ORD-EDI-IAD-PHL for August. A while ago ORD-EDI and EDI-IAD were cancelled and we were rerouted PHL-IAD-EWR-EDI-EWR-IAD-PHL. This morning when I checked the reservation EWR-EDI and EDI-EWR had been cancelled and we were not rerouted to EDI at all. Just showed a very expensive PHL-IAD-EWR-IAD-PHL Anyway, just called and asked to have it cancelled and refunded, as the online system was only offering ETC and FFC. Much to my delight, the agent agreed and about 5 minutes later confirmed the reservation had been cancelled and refunded to the original form of payment. Hopefully, this is a good sign for those of you who are facing similar situations.

I was able to do it online for 1 of the 7 PNRs I converted to ETCs. The 1K agent was able to do one of the others right away, but I was told I might have to wait up to 2 weeks for the other 5 ETCs to be issued. I am not sure why that is the case - seems a bit strange.
