Active thread; UA-Schedule changes; +25% TATL 2022 capacity, Q2 TPAC down 65% vs 2019; June changes

UA publishes a schedule for 330 days in advance (called Beginning of Schedule) and in the past would make tweaks quarterly and things would be fairly settles 3-4 months out. Updates would occur Friday evening / Saturday morning (Chicago time). Routine additions could occur anytime.

However, during the COVID era, UA has gone to a more dynamic and shorter-term setting of schedule (as has the other carriers). Presently UA, while UA is still publishing a schedule for 330 days in advance it reflects pre-COVID operational levels and is considered just a placeholder schedule. Then 3-5 weeks prior to a month, UA makes a major update of that month's schedule.

Examples (Major updates)
The October 2020 schedule was updated 4-5 September 2020
The November 2020 schedule was updated 2-3 October 2020
The December 2020 schedule was updated 30-31 October 2020
Holidays can move the major date a week earlier or later.
Weekly updates are still generally done over night Friday-Saturday (Chicago)

UA does not publish a summary of most schedule changes but a variety of sources below do and summaries / links of those sources can be found in this thread & wiki.

Change Fees Are Gone For Good
The only thing constant is change and at United Airlines, some of the fees associated with changes related to flying are gone for good. The carrier announced today that it is permanently getting rid of change fees on all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S., effective immediately. And starting on January 1, 2021, any United customer can fly standby for free, regardless of fare type, on a flight departing the day of their travel, a first among U.S. carriers, while MileagePlus® Premier® members can confirm a seat on a different flight on the same day with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket if a seat in the same ticket fare class is available.

United is also extending its waiver for new tickets issued through December 31, 2020, to permit unlimited changes with no fee. This policy applies to all ticket types issued after March 3, 2020 and is valid for domestic and international travel.

The new change fee policy applies to all standard Economy and Premium cabin tickets for travel within the U.S. 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and customers will not be limited in the number of times they adjust their flights.

Additionally, United is giving customers more flexibility to change their flights on the day of their travel so they can head home if a meeting ends earlier or enjoy a few more hours on vacation. With the ability to list for same-day standby for free, customers will now have an option to take a different flight with the same origin and destination airports as their original itinerary if space is available at departure. This enhanced option will be available to all customers for travel within the U.S. and to and from international destinations beginning on January 1, 2021. Customers who want to switch flights will be able to add themselves to the standby list through United’s award-winning mobile app, on united.com or at the airport no later than 30 minutes prior to departure for domestic flights and one hour before departure on international flights.

The carrier is also improving the travel experience for its MileagePlus members including waiving all redeposit fees on award travel for flights changed or cancelled more than 30 days before departure and allowing all MileagePlus Premier members to confirm a different flight on the day of their travel. As a way to thank MileagePlus Premier members for their loyalty, beginning January 1, 2021, all Premier members will be able to confirm a seat for free on a different flight with the same departure and arrival cities as their original ticket. This expanded option will allow MileagePlus Silver members and above to confirm a new seat in the same ticket fare class if space is available. Earlier this year, United announced that it will extend status for MileagePlus Premier and United Global Services® members through January 2022. United also reduced thresholds for Premier qualification by 50 percent for each status level, to make reaching an even higher status tier easier.

We’re extending electronic certificatesTo give you more flexibility when you travel, electronic certificates are now valid for 24 months from the date they were issued. This includes all currently valid electronic certificates and all new ones issued on or after April 1, 2020.

Yep, exactly. With codeshare flight numbers, you get codeshare inventory. With native flight numbers, you get native inventory. They can definitely be different, and it looks like they are in this case. There is a non-zero chance that you can get this ticketed on United by calling, especially if you say something like "I have a specific set of flights that I found online, with the outbound on a partner and the return flights on United. May I read them to you and see if you see the same price I found?"

Note that you will earn PQP based upon dollars spent if you buy this ticket from United. If you buy it from a third party, the UA segments will still earn based on dollars spent, but the others would earn based on fare class and distance -- you'd get over 2600 PQP on the outbound alone.

Also, users were reporting horrendous experiences with the AC call center before these virus concerns came to light. I'm not sure I'd be booking on AC right now myself.

Question. I have a multi trip ticket from LHR-IAH,SFO-WLG,WLG-SFO-ORD-LHR. The LHR-IAH and SFO-WLG are in March/April while the WLG-SFO-ORD-LHR are in August. With the cancellation waver is it possible to cancel the LHR-IAH & SFO-WLG segments and still keep the later ones? Or will this end up being repriced to a lot more? Thanks in advance for your help

If you call and ask for that change to be made under a waiver, it will be re-priced at the current one-way WLG-LHR price. Depending upon the day you're traveling in August, that could be £700-£800 for economy. This doesn't appear to be a market where the one-way prices are extremely expensive compared to round-trip prices, as some are.

If your flights actually get cancelled, you should be able to get it re-priced on a half-round-trip basis instead. Under the waiver, though, they'l get repriced.

Note that you should check your fare rules to see what happens to the remainder of the cost. Look for the word "residual" to see if you'll get a travel credit (valid for flights on United), or if it is ignored, meaning UA keeps the difference.

I called into UA to cancel a bunch of flights due to the National Emergency declaration. Surprised to get through to an agent in 2 minutes. Very pleasant, but very overwhelmed. She said they're getting ready to yank LHR flights too soon and that her life is about to become more chaotic.

I joked that with UA barely flying any planes, she'll have that many less changes/cancellations to make in the future. Not sure if she appreciated my humor.

The rebooking specialists who make those calls are the best. They can work magic. A completely different class from the line agents who answer phones.

Question about the 10 points of entry for US citizens

I have a sfo-cdg direct flight in P Tuesday March 17. No problem, if it doesn't get cancelled. I have a return cdg-ewr-sfo on a different PNR for April 7--- one of the discounted P fares cdg-sfo-cdg bought last July.. EWR isn't one of the approved entry ports. The only UA flights showing for April 7 and that route go through EWR. LH and Air Canada route differently. I would like to find a different route, so I can actually make it to SFO, and an earlier departure date(say March 31) from CDG. Any suggestions how to handle this, make it work, and avoid any upfaring? Thanks in advance to all of you.

Are we expecting the Europe flight cuts show up in the schedule tonight? What time do they usually load the new schedule?

So when does UA announce their flight cuts? I'm sitting on a 5 day trip to PVR at the end of April, and am now concerned with Mexico not allowing Americans in.

I don’t think this a realistic question with everything going on a day to day basis. UA is doing what they have to do, reacting as best as they can.

Until Mexico (or US ) government makes some announcement UA will likely continue flying unless demand drops off. Demand changes are usually loaded Friday night / Saturday morning.

As anticipated, I was impacted by the batch of changes loaded Saturday morning. Award ticket for April, they basically added a segment, but newer Polaris product and reasonable connection times.

Was:
CDG-ORD-(773 old Polaris)
long layover
ORD-XXX (Y, waitlisted for F)

Now:
ORD-EWR (787-10, new Polaris)
EWR-ORD (confirmed First)
ORD-XXX (Y, waitlist for F)

Overall satisfied with the change.
