Problem #1 right there. It's only 15K PQPs if you do not fly a minimum of 34 PQFs. Otherwise, it's $13,500 in spend and 34 flights and you are requal'd for 1K already. Must happen on/before July 27, 2021 in respect to this promotion.

Why don't you just go to the website, sign up and it will tell you exactly what you need and what they are offering you? At a minimum, even if you don't net whatever you need to via "Fly to the Finish" you will earn the Breakout Bonus.

There is no rollover at United and they've not announced a program for that. Given they are giving away PQPs like candy this year I highly doubt there will be any rollover of any kind. If nothing else we may get to extend some PlusPoints again.

Neither is anyone who already requal'd for 1K. We are the ones getting the absolute screw over here. GS is already GS for another year. Maybe they will inflate the GS ranks this year with those of us who re-qual'd for 1K naturally without needing any help.

One could argue that if they're being reminted then they are flying less. Sure...but the whole point of the promo is to inflate and swell the ranks of elites because United expects travel to return with another vengeance next year. So all those re-minted 1Ks are fighting for the paltry upgrade space with those who actually spent the money and requalified the "hard" way.

+1
United has trained me well. After 50 or so PlusPoint UG failures last year, I decided that buying F was the only way to actually fly in F. I originally started flying paid F during the heart of the pandemic for social-distancing reasons and thought the expense was justified. Now, I have no fear of catching the C-Virus, even though there are evidently lots of "breakthrough" infections out there, and am instead flying in F because I like the additional room and more comfortable seat. Since F prices are cheap, I still feel like the expense is justified. However, I also don't have any loyalty to UA anymore. Whichever airline sells me the cheapest F seat, combined with a reasonable total transit time, gets my business. 1K means nothing to me unless I am able to use the PlusPoints which, unfortunately, seems to only be possible on some international routes which will likely be closing again soon.

There is a thread where FT'ers were discussing 1K recognition and how UA was trying to get more cooperation from its staff in recognizing elites. Well, I've flown 70K miles on UA so far this year and only got recognition and my meal choice once. So, how valuable is 1K as a status? Without the UGs, it's not worth much. YMMV.

I'm fairly sure UA will do something else for at least some non-US based members. If they don't, they are going to decimate their number of members with status which is going to leave a lot of free agents looking at other airlines as travel re-starts.

Take Australia, for example. Although United (and several other *A airlines) are flying there, residents can't legally leave the country and aren't going to be able to through at least the end of the year, so they can't take those flights. And there's no domestic *A airlines. So realistically the only means of getting PQP this year will have been the 1/4 bonus earlier in the year - which means 1K becomes Silver and everyone else becomes GM (GS stays GS due to the prior extension). Such a significant drop will hurt United, and you can bet that Qantas (and possibly even Delta) is going to do whatever they can to woo those who lose status as a result.

Whilst most countries aren't quite this extreme (at a minimum, having the ability to fly a *A airline, even if not United), the same general problem for UA is going to apply.

2. If you only spend a few hundred dollars on three flights they'll still give you roughly 3K PQP. (your few hundred PQPs + the 2250 PQP bonus)
3. They've effectively removed the PQF burden from the program for this year!!!

#3 is key for many folks!
I was a little uncertain first about the promotion as a challenge: "10 PQFs and 2700 PQP or 3000 PQP before the end of November" because I was not sure if it could be either "10 PQFs + 2700 PQP" or "1 PQFs + 3000 PQP". What about the minimum of 4 PQFs for status? If #3 is true, then it would be hopefully workable for me to retain my 1K status by trying my "first" flight since the last flight in December 20, 2019.

What's the best way to book bulk fare tickets?

Decimate? How many 1K's are Australia based? I'd be surprised if it is over 100. They've preserved the true HVF with GS extensions. Even if it is 100 Australia based 1K's - all 100 start flying again and they all bail to Qantas or Delta? I don't think so. And at this rate, those Australians won't be going anywhere in 2022.

I think Australia based 1K's are more unicorns than anything else.

I can buy into this case for extensions - US based 1K's who regularly traveled to Australia cannot do those trips - those are the people really impacted if not flying somewhere else.

I have yet to requalify for Platinum. I'm many PQF and ~3300 PQP short, or ~4300PQP short (without the PQF requirement). My 'Fly to the Finish' offer seems to be 'complete 8 PQF and earn 1800 PQP', or 'earn 2000 PQP' in order to requalify for Platinum. I have an upcoming trip which I booked on July 29, for a flight next week which will earn more than 2000 PQP. Will that trip count, even though it was booked before the “Promotion Period” started? I can't seem to find the exact wording I need in any Ts & Cs anywhere.

Thanks!

If this is the only promotion for status for the rest of the year, we should see a lot of 1ks leaving the ranks which should be nice for upgrades hopefully.

  • Our Breakout Bonus offer helps Premiers who have already requalified and members without status another opportunity to earn PQP bonuses for up to 3 trips taken before November 30th – one of them can even be an award trip!

I'm still confused, and getting a little frustrated by how much time it takes to try to parse the terms of this promo. I'd like to use the Breakout Bonus promo instead of the Fly to the Finish promo. I think I am entitled to the Breakout Bonus because as of July 27, 2021, I held silver status and needed fewer than 350 PQP to re-qualify for silver. This makes me eligible according to Paragraph 3(a) of the T and C of the Breakout Bonus promo. However, I have been assigned the Fly to the Finish promo according to an email I received. Is there anyone to contact for help with this?

I would certainly hope so. And while Australia is an extreme case, even Europeans are basically not able to take any long distance travel as North America and most of Asia is closed, and travelling to most of Africa / indian subcontinent translates to 14-days quarantine upon return.. so yes we can fly 'A intra europe and earn some PQPs per trip... a long way to requalify for 1K... and again, impossible if UA Metal is requisite.

016 ticket on partner metal???

Also no ideas if PQP from partner flights on UA stock would count or not. If they stick with their current wording (XXX Premier qualifying points (PQP) on United or United Express flights), I would say no.
Right - very curious if a 016 ticket on LH metal for example would count for this promo or not...if current wording is indeed for UA metal then I suppose not which is annoying but I get it.

Yes! It will count towards your overall PQP earning if they are non-United flights. The promotion has UA and UEX requirements. If they are UA/UAX flights, they will be counted as part of the promotion or challenge.

Oh, I should have been more specific. Yes, all UA flights, booked through UA. So I'm assuming this will count toward the promotion, and I will requalify for Platinum after the trip (even though I would have normally been short of the previous PQP requirements)?
