Current cost of one-way travel to China

Multiple COVID tests at gateway city SFO: $700
7 day hotel at SFO: $1,000
Airfare: $6,500 Y or $12,000 in PE or $19,000 in J

or 275K miles in Y, 400K miles in PE and 650K miles in J

Quarantine cost in China is extra.

Fellow GS folks

What is the likelihood that a GS gets bumped due to overbooking?

I have a saver Y award ticket on 857 SFO-PVG and flight is 70% sold. China just ordered 40% capacity restriction on this flight.

UA needs to bump 100 pax.

near zero

IDB due to oversells may provide some insight into the process -- elites last, fare and status matter
UA will likely try voluntary changes first

My flight is not really IDB due to oversell. My flight is 70% full but Shanghai government ordered UA to reduce capacity to 40%. This is out of UA's control.

Currently my flight has 260 pax booked, and UA must cancel 120 people's tickets (140/350=40%).

Do you still say the chance of GS being kicked off the flight is still near zero?

So it is oversold for allowed capacity

While this is in advance of day of travel and not a classical IDB, the referenced wiki was for IDB and one would suspect UA might use a similar process. However, there really is no precedence to make a definitive statement. The PVG situation is unique as this will be more than one flight for an extended period of time. Nevertheless status and fare are likely to play a major role, what else would you think?. Until UA gets more definitive we just speculating. As a GS, I would be contacting the GS desk and asking.

You are right that we are just speculating. At this point SFO-PVG is sold out for May and June. I am on an award ticket.

UA will do massive cancelations in next few days for May 8 UA 857.

Not sure if I should proactively call GS desk before they start canceling people's ticket.

Just hope that UA would protect a GS.

off-ish topic: Is there a way to see the pax booked on flights? by cabin? I just had been using expert mode and assumed anything 9 means ~`wide-open' or I look at seat selection when calculating my chance for an upgrade using Plus Points into Polaris, when needed.

A travel agent told me the actual booking numbers for UA 857.

The only way a GS would get kicked off is if the agent doing the offloading made a mistake/missed the status/hit the wrong key - essentially human error.

I am cautiously optimistic that situation in Shanghai will improve significantly in next 21 days.

The government is losing cash too, a boatload of cash every day....

I wonder, with the lowest available fares being $8600 in Y, $12000 in PP, and $19000 in J for the next few months, if UA857 is now the most expensive regularly-scheduled commercial flight in operation (in terms of average per-passenger fare).

It seems possible... it's actually kind of fascinating the look at the fare table - they overrode the normal fares with a blackout beyond EOS and the remaining fares have a zen-like quality

Cheaper fares exist if you could ever find the inventory.
