Thanks, everyone. I guess I will just be grateful I am at least able to travel and not look at the drawbacks.

Good point about the hotels. I think NJ is generous about travel from adjoining states. So I should be able to check into Marriott across the parking lot or the Hilton without a problem. Thanks for that.

I rebooked the most roundabout way into EWR as UA would allow. Otherwise would have had a 12-hour layover.

Yup
I think that is why I added that last line to my post

Sounds wonderful on paper, but as there are all kinds of exemptions, e.g. neighboring states of NJ and CT - you'd land at EWR, hop on the Airtrain from the terminal, transfer to NJTransit, and ride into NY Penn Station - due to the volume of non-air travelers (commuters, for example), there are no checks (enforcement) of those heading into the city, at least via train travel.

LAX Club 2/15

Currently in the LAX club. Upon checking in was given a "thank you" amenity kit, which consists of a water bottle with sanitizing wipes, Godiva chocolate, mints, tooth brush and tooth paste.
Food offerings are actually worse than when I was here during the stricter lock down. But still has cheese cake, cheese and prosciutto wraps, instant noodles, and various chips and cookies.

Got the same at SFO last night. Desk agent called it a "Valentine's Day thank-you to our customers"...

Did not get it at SFO yesterday afternoon, but that is fine. I have sent enough of those water bottles to the recycling!

I wouldn't call a 5 cent plastic water bottle really trying - if they wanted to really try, they would restore proper Polaris and domestic F service, and provide an enhanced F+B experience at the airport for Polaris passengers in lieu of the Polaris Lounge.

I would call the 5 cent water bottle an unnecessary pollutant, which will likely be mis-used by customers in the lounges who will try to repeat-refill the bottles from beverage dispensers while risking cross-contamination.

I’d say $1.95 is a more realistic cost-estimation for that re-usable water bottle with logo.

Nice enough gesture.
I would bet they had these in inventory for some reason, and decided to get rid of them in this manner. Doubtful they spent new money on them now, so not like they could have spent the money on true service enhancements.

Yeah, I think it's a nice, even if small gesture.

For those who don't recognise the bottles, they are the freshen-up kits (toothpaste, makeup remover, etc.) that they give out sometimes when you're delayed overnight and getting a hotel. The Thank You hearts sticker is new.

With all the weather related cancellations this week, maybe they should have held on to them

My guess is the Polaris lounges open up around July for what’s gonna be some summer travel.

I give the odds of that near zero without any leisure travel. At the HNL club now - grateful they’ve kept it open with only 1 morning flight - a total of 5 of us in club which is more than usual. Also happy they swapped to a polarized 777 today.
