There's a reason why this thread exists. Is UA in peril? Yes, every airline is. But that doesn't excuse that we know how Kirby will react to this situation to his benefit if UA comes out on the other side. If there are two people this forum loves to loathe it's Smisek (turns out he really was crooked) and Kirby.
