Or a negotiating tactic.

Actually Boeing just announced "compensation" for the 737MAX will be in 787 with huge discounts.

So I wonder of UA will be grabbing more 787s and more delays on the 350s. The 797 was also delayed 3 days ago so United will probably want some 321LR, so perhaps some of the 350s will be turned into 321s.

oh to be a fly on the wall in the United offices.
mrt88 and east_west like this.

UA is certainly dragging its feet WRT A350, but while the MAX is currently grounded, it does have 100 MAX 10 on order, so doubt they will want to go for A321, though it has been speculated (maybe this thread) that A 321 would be a good way for UA to rid itself of A350s in the order books.

Maybe they can convert the A350s to A321s and the MAX 10s to 787s. The 78X seems capable of replacing the 777-200s for most of UAs routes, and the original justification for the A350 order was to replace those 777-200s.

How many A321s would the 45 A350-900 on order be equivalent to?

I want to see that poster with the rising blue!

Well, many of us were correct. United today announced they are deferring their a350 order to 2027. Makes sense considering their growing 787 fleet, and the investment being made in retrofitting 777s with Polaris.

Why would UA or any other airline choose the A350 over the 787 or vice versa

Presumably A350 is more competitive in range and capacity given that it came out afterwards?

BuT if UA already has a fleet of 787s, why add the A350 if the capabilities and costs, both capital and operating, are comparable?

I would love to understand the pros and cons of the 350 vs 787. To my uninformed eye they seem to have similar capabilities but many sensible airlines operate both.

So is this a part of a deal to not take A350 orders that was rumored a couple of years ago?

(sorry if this was covered elsewhere, not reading much about flying these days with so many of us grounded )

No the 350 deal is still on with the biggest hurdle to canceling the order apparently being Rolls Royce engines, which are part of the deal and the only engines offered for that aircraft to my knowledge. Who knows if UA would like to cancel or not.

It was a rumor? I thought I read in the news that UA was deferring the delivery of the A350. I don't know why they would want to do that. I really like the A350. I wish UA would follow DL and use A350s for their tpac routes. I really dislike the B787 because of the windows. I hate it! Although I read that Airbus signed a deal with that company for those gel-based windows to be used in their aircrafts in the future. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Having window shades is perfect for me!

Any chance UA will buy the Airbus A220 planes?

I can't speak for the RR engine issue, but there have been a few deferrals of the A350's to UA:

If I remember right they were originally ordered around 2009-10ish, for delivery in '15 or '16....
That was deferred/changed in '13 or '14 to a different model of 350, and delivery was pushed to '18 or '19
That was deferred/changed in '17 or '18 to a a few variants of the 350 and pushed to '21 or '22
That was deferred/changed late last year and pushed to 2027.

Its anybody's guess... While I would love to see it, I think the 737-700's have that size of plane captured already. Moving to the A220 would then be redundant.

What is UA's long term plan for its widebody fleet especially for its tpac flights? The A321XLR seems to be for TATL and maybe to South America.

I’d say that the large fleet of B789s is destined to be the workhorse of flights to Asia and Australia. If and when the A350s arrive, they’ll be tasked for similar missions. Flight as SFO to TLV, DUB and LHR, as examples, will likely have B787s too. Once the new *A terminal has opened at LAX, I’m hoping the airline increases the number of long haul flights from SoCal. It will be interesting to see what happens.
