If tickets are still for sale, I would buy them. Worst case, if the flight does get canceled, you can rebook onto EWR-IAH-LIM or get a full refund. I hesitate to come to quick judgments about your travel agent acquaintance, but I have not seen any intel about the flight getting canceled or suspended.
