As of Feb. 5, only Global Services are able to select FC seats. The ability for 1K to reserve seats was removed. Existing 1K seat selections appear to be kept. In June 2019, the advance access for 1Ks on J/C/D fares was restored. [It appears this is not the case.]
Ex-GlobalFirst seats are selectable for all confirmed business class passengers at check in, even if >24 hrs from flight with GF seats (in the case of positioning flights).

Now that I have no plans for any international long haul travel, I'm wondering what is the success rate for 1K FTers getting those First Class seats and actually sitting in them.
My numbers this year: 6 international long haul flights booked on pmUA 772s, I managed to get First Class seats 3 times but due to swaps I entered only 1 plane with a Boarding Pass for a former First Class seat.
My 1K wife on the same flights fared a little better: she managed to get First Class seats 4 times but due to swaps she entered 2 planes with a Boarding Pass for a former First Class seat.

I had two INTL long-haul flights booked in J on pmUA 772s earlier this year - 2/2 for on the old GF seats. But, I booked the flights when 1Ks had the ability to pre-select the seats.

1/1 swapped for Polaris and flew that. I've been booking away from the sUA 772s because I don't want to deal with swaps.

Polaris booking allowing Seat Selection in old United First section??
I'm Flying ORD to MUC on Saturday, UA flight 952. This is a paid J ticket (Polaris Business) on a 777-222, on an old three class plane.
At check in this morning, it allowed me to select seats in the old United First/Global First section (where there's only 8 seats instead of the normal 16). Is this normal or am I going to be kicked out of these seats when we go to board tomorrow evening? The label on the phone called it Polaris Business so I assume it's okay but I'll switch back to our old seats if there's a chance we'll be kicked out of that section by the GA. 3
Has anyone else come across this yet?

If it's open, it's yours to take!
But, watch the flight status like a hawk for a swap - you'll get re-assigned a new seat in the event of a swap, and you may want to change it.

I'm scheduled to be on one of these planes tomorrow, departing in less than 24 hours. I am confirmed in J, and I am a 1K. The seat map shows 4 open F seats, so I should be able to move to one of them when I check-in, right? But my first flight is on Austrian Airlines, so I can't check in using the United app, and the Austrian website gives a technical error when I try checking in there. Is there anything I can do, other than hope that there is still an F seat available when I go to the airport?

Call the 1k desk and have them allocate you a seat.

Has it changed? previously i was able as a 1K member, to choose the old global first seats for long haul IAD- NRT. Now my 1k operator says its not allowed. Do I have to wait to check in to do this now?
