Which many non-status fanatics would clearly consider out of the question. Sure some do this but not really a useful / practical answer for most.

UA usually runs these sweeps 2nd week of January and later. Similar timing to rounds of GS invites.

that as well ... but also the high spenders they are bumping up. If you spend 3x the required PQD but miss PQM by just a bit ... UA has historically bumped you up.

23 miles short of Gold for 2019

Subj. Do I have a chance that UA will give me Gold as a goodwill? What are other options, if any?

This is in the realm that UA might do but also might not.

What is your past history?
Have you held Gold or higher recently?
Any compelling reason you fell short? Sick, lost job, ....
Has your PQD history been strong?

In a week or two UA will likely make you a status buy up offer, this is standard for mid-January
Last year 's thread 2018 UA MP elite status buy-up offers (for higher status than earned in 2017)

Before doing that, it would be worth calling MP Service Center and just ask if UA will round up for you.

The wiki of this thread has some links to threads from past years which point to cases where the individual was successful -- not many but there are some.

PP or Gold since 2012 non-stop. In terms of spend, I do fly with UA when I need to get to US, but majority of my routes are with *A because UA does not fly there. PQD requirement does not apply, but historically was low - all 100% of spend is in low cost Economy fares only.

Thanks for the suggestion and I will call to MP. Should I call to generic number or there are better options?

Any data points on only having 3/4 segments operated by UA? I have 93k PQM and $13kPQD - would hate to lose out on Platinum because of the one segment (most of my flying is ANA operated with several UA codeshares).

I think that you have to 4 flights on UA or UAX to qualify for any UA Premier Level. So, with 3/4 in reality you should not qualify even for Silver.

Qualified for Platinum in 2017. Ended 2018 at 73,303 PQM but $17,865 PQD. Given high PQD, is it worth emailing MPSC to ask about keeping Platinum? Does it matter what I say if I email them?

If it matters, 2017 stats were 75,764 PQM and ~$23,000 PQD. That was the first year I qualified for any status on United.
