I do not know which day you will be on UA 989. My travel was on Sunday (April 8) and I was originally booked on UA 989. There were about five seats remaining at T-30 h and four of them were gone by T-9h. At departure, nobody on the upgrade standby list was cleared. Fortunately for me, I saw R2 for the later flight (UA932), I changed my booking to this flight and get it cleared immediately. So, it will be helpful to continuously check R spaces for both flights. Good luck.

I didn't check in when OLCI opened for my itinerary in case it screwed up my request for this flight, as it's the "more important" flight of the itin. There were 6 seats open until three got upgraded at the T-24:30 mark. I suspect I would have cleared even without a GPU but the GPU was expiring so might as well use it.
