This is an archive thread, the active thread is MileagePlus X – Shopping App to Earn Additional Award Miles

NEW as of 11/9/18:
App now includes MP Dining and MP Shopping in addition to eGift cards.

Dining: Once you log in and enable location sharing the app will tell you what MP Dining restaurant options are in your area. The app appears to know if you are a base or VIP dining member, and shows the appropriate earn rate you can expect (3 for base member or 5 miles per $ for VIP). Restaurants show in an incomplete "Nearby" list or are further visible under the "Cuisine Types" tab.

Shopping: You can browse the same list of stores you'd find on the main MileagePlus shopping website. There are tabs to show which stores are offering elevated offers as well as another with a searchable list of all stores who participated in the program. Tapping on the store will give you the option take you to that store's site so you can shop in your device's browser just as you would on a laptop or desktop.

Maximizing this app opp:
As per the app, you can double or triple dip. You get the UA miles from the app (+25% bonus if the app is attached to a MP acct), you get the miles (or CB, or whatever the deal is with your CC) from the CC attached to the app (via .bomb), and if you use the GC that is generated by the App and apply it online to a purchase via the MP shopping portal, you get the UA miles for that as well.
Ex: Buy $50 Staples MP-X credit with the app and get:
A. 2x on the app at Staples=100 UA (if you have a MP CC attached to the app, you get 25% more = 125 UA), PLUS
B. 2% CB with your BA+ card for example = $1 CB (but then no extra 25% bonus shown in A., above), PLUS
C. 1x on MP portal = 50 UA

Total would be 150 UA + $1CB in the example above (a UA double dip, e.g. A and C, but a non-UA dip added).

More scenarios:
-If you used a 1x UA MP card in the above example, it would be 125 UA+50 UA+50 UA=225 UA (a UA triple dip, e.g. A, B, and C).

-If you used a 5x INK card in the above example, it would be 100UA+*MAYBE 250UR+50UA = 150U+*MAYBE 250UR (a UA double dip, e.g. A and C, but a non-UA dip added and IMHO the best value: effectively 8x! *assuming the INK codes correctly as office supplies**).

**This is probably not the case, see post 513- no triple dipping

Conversions
Some MPX merchants allow for the purchase of a gift card with a gift card. This may allow you to use MPX to indirectly purchase a gift card to shop at a merchant otherwise not offered on MPX. As always, YMMV as you may encounter some merchants that may not allow this practice, rogue cashiers/managers who think it might not be allowed, or POS systems that are designed to not allow this (understandable as they make little to no money on the sale).

These merchants *may* include:

Best Buy - Does not allow purchase of Visa/Amex/MC gift cards, other merchant GCs OK.
GameStop
Sears

MPX Merchants that sell other merchants' GCs, but do not allow the purchase of GC with GC (MPX or otherwise):

Staples - Not allowed per policy, but may go through on their POS if cashier ignores prompt.
Barnes and Noble - No official policy - cashiers are trained that it's not allowed although it will go through on their POS
Office Depot
Lowes
eBay

Note: There appears to be a $3000.00 per 24 hours spend limit

MPX only works within the US - as per T&Cs! If you try to use the app outside the US, error code 126 will pop up.

Your MPX account name and password are the same as the united.com / MP account name and password. And your mile earned are locked to that MP account.
If using MPX to get a few miles to prevent mileage expiration, you need to be logged in as that account whose miles are approaching expiration.

In your account info is "Member since " date

Anybody know if there are any MPX restaurants that are also MileagePlus Dining restaurants?

At least based on what I have seen in NYC, no - I don't ever recall seeing any chain restaurants on the MP Dining website when I've browsed it.

Credit card name match.

I tried to make a purchase at a merchant and keeps getting error message. The credit card I select is under my wife's name. Anyone had similar situations?

Has anyone used this with Arrival+ and did purchases code as airline? I assume they do not. I will try but thought I should ask first. Thank you.

I noticed the minimum purchase at Panera has been lowered to $2. Previously it was something like $25 which made it prohibitive to use when you're buying a meal just for yourself.

Good catch. However, the $25 limit didn't stop me. I'd buy $25 and use it up over a few visits. I'll be at Panera after work today and I'll pay with an existing gift card.

Having a real issue here and it's got me extremely pi**ed off.

Went to Footaction for the miles via the app at 5x. Checked out, bought giftcard only for the clerk to say he's never heard of such a thing. Calls the district manager who then directs him to someone else. I hear the guy explain the situation to 3 different people only for him to tell me that "he's been told that we cant accept a gift card unless its an actual plastic gift card". After waiting for 30+ minutes for this to get settled, I just end up paying via my debit card thinking I'll just cancel the gift card I just purchased.

I cant figure out how to do so. According to the FAQ it says to go to the main menu and select "feedback" and let them know what happened, this doesn't seem like it will help. Is there any number to call???

Can anyone here please help me?

I went to a Panda Express at Denver Airport (it showed on the app); I went to handover my phone showing the e-gift card and they said no gift cards accepted (understandably this is true at many chain-restaurants in airports - but it showed on the app). Send a "feedback" via the app - and they had some b.s. answer that I should call the location first before "driving" to it and ordering. It was $9 bucks, I called credit card company and they gave me a statement credit (not a chargeback). Not sure how much your charge was, but if small, consider this if your response from "feedback" doesn't satisfy you

Yes I would do a chargeback with your card. That seems to be the best option as they clearly did not honor your valid payment method which I am sure they are legally required to.

I tried to cancel one. I went down in flames. Perhaps you will do better than me, but I'm no pushover.

I recommend you abandon your refund quest; instead do one or more of the following.
  • Try it at another Footaction store.
  • Try it again at the same Footaction store (months from now).
  • Try it at footaction.com

Good luck.

The other option is to call up Footaction and complain. Then maybe they will let you go back to the same store and return your purchase that you paid on your card and then re-purchase it at the same price with the gift card. Hopefully they will be able to give the store some instructions. The problem is you did not intend to buy a giftcard but to use the MXP app to get you bonus miles and this is the way the app is designed. You shouldn't have to "live with the gift card" just because the store doesn't know how to process it so either they make it right or refund you. Since it might not be possible to get it refunded the only way to make it right is to refund your original purchase and redo the transaction with the gift card or to file a chargeback with your card company.

I agree with you. But the T&C do not. Purchases are final. Thus, I suggested means of redress that didn't involve a refund. Indeed, your good suggestion also does not. The OP should try it.

Thank you all for the feedback.

I went to Footaction to buy 4 plain black t-shirts that I needed for work. The only reason I went to Footaction was with the intention of gaining 5 miles/$. That being said the total was $27.01 for which I purchased the gift card from the app for. When it didn't go through I paid out of pocket which essentially makes the purchase for 4 plain black t-shirts $54.02, the same black shirts that I could have purchased as under shirts from target for $8. That's the part that honestly hurts the most, it feels as if I got robbed.

I still haven't heard anything back from my "feedback" that I left. I'm giving them until tomorrow to respond or I will try and call my bank but I have a feeling that they wont reverse the charge because it wasn't fraudulent activity, and if they do reverse it they will probably say they need to send me a new card as well. Seeing how this is my debit card, it will be a huge inconvenience all for trying to get 168 miles.

No matter how this turns out, I highly doubt I will ever use this program again.

How long did it take to post the MP online shopping part of the miles to post?
