United Airlines suspends NZ service (Suspension Period: April 18, 2017 - October 30, 2017)
Per New Zealand Herald quoting UA:
Air New Zealand service between Auckland and Chicago
From Nov. 30, 2018, Air New Zealand will operate three times weekly, year-round service with its new configuration Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. Flight time will be approximately 15 hours northbound and just over 16 hours southbound. Air New Zealand code share service will be offered on around 100 flights across the U.S. for convenient connections to Auckland via Chicago. United Airlines operates more flights from its hub at O'Hare International Airport than any other airline, with more than 500 flights to 147 airports across the United States.
United expands service between San Francisco and Auckland
Beginning in April 2019, United will extend service between its West Coast hub in San Francisco and Auckland to year-round with three-times-weekly service. In partnership with Air New Zealand, United's flight arriving in Auckland will offer passengers more than 20 connections across the region. The return trip utilizes United's extensive route network in San Francisco, which provides connections to the United States, Canada, and Latin America. United operates more than 290 daily flights from its hub at San Francisco International Airport to 79 airports across the U.S. and 26 international destinations. Tickets for the expanded San Francisco schedule will be available on united.com and airnewzealand.com later this year.
United service between San Francisco and Auckland will operate with a Boeing 777-300ER between November and March and will operate with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft between April and October.

Per New Zealand Herald quoting UA:
This change is in response to seasonal variations, which will also see United Airlines adding an additional three flights per week starting December 18, 2017 after resuming its daily Auckland to San Francisco services on October 31, 2017. This will increase services to a total of 10 United's flights per week during the high seasonal demand period. Passengers who have already purchased tickets during the suspended period are being contacted by the airline and offered flights on the Air New Zealand service instead. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience and advise that customers will not be out of pocket as a result of this shift in scheduling and will retain all frequent flyer benefits."

Has anyone used the shower facilities that it says are "just outside the international arrivals gate"? It says they are free of charge but you need to have your own towel/supplies. I've only been to AKL in 2005, I'm going this week and will hit the ground running from the morning of arrival until the evening when I get to my hotel in Hamilton.

So to answer my own question I checked out the showers this morning. When you exit customs you to to the left and you'll see the bathroom/shower icons next to the McDonald's. You can bring your own towel or buy one at the Relay mini mart across the hall for $18 NZD ($12 USD).
For the most part clean, looked like the 3 of them were vacant when I got there around 8:15am or so.

That's more than twice as bad as when I had to get a towel (from the tour) when going caving in Waitomo.

I figured it was a bit over priced for white terry lol. But, my camera bag carry on was packed with gear and my change of underwear and tshirt so I couldn't really fuss bringing one from home. I tried out Uniqlo "Airism" underwear on the flight which travel well but I was starting to get a little scratchy throat and a hot temp on the flight so I thought it was worth it to freshen up.

Airisms are the best, especially on long flights ^

Seeing on Instagram: UA is making SFO-AKL year-round (using what I presume is going to be a 3-class or Polaris-retrofitted sUA 772 in off-season), and NZ is starting nonstop ORD-AKL (3x weekly) . ^^ on both counts! Surprised they wouldn’t use something lower-capacity like a 788 or 789 in offseason.

It seems the implication of this is that the UA service from Northern Summer 2019 is year round 3x/week, with varying aircraft gauge, so really redistributing capacity and aircraft use across the year. Not clear that in summer there's that much of an increase in capacity compared to past years as previously there was 6-7 x UA 773, and now there's 3 x UA 773 and 3 x NZ 789.
Speaking as someone who often travels off-season, is schedule flexible with the days, and has 1 million miles on UA in his sights, the year round service resumption is excellent news!

United Airlines and Air New Zealand Announce New Nonstop Service Between Chicago and Auckland - Mar 27, 2018
United Airlines and Air New Zealand Announce New Nonstop Service Between Chicago and Auckland
New route expands joint venture
United Airlines increases service between San Francisco and Auckland
AUCKLAND, New Zealand and CHICAGO, March 27, 2018
-- Air New Zealand today announced it will begin new nonstop service between Auckland and Chicago, beginning Nov. 30, 2018. The new service announcement deepens the joint venture relationship between Air New Zealand and United Airlines. In addition to the new route announcement, United announced it will extend its seasonal service between San Francisco and Auckland to year-round beginning April 2019.
"We expect the addition of Chicago to our network to be an attractive option for Americans keen to explore New Zealand and Kiwis wanting to visit Chicago or head on to other North American destinations," says Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon. "As well as being great for travelers, this new route is also good news for New Zealand, as we expect it to contribute around $70 million annually to our economy, and we know that more than 50 percent of spending by U.S. visitors is done outside of the main centers. We'll be working alongside our colleagues at United Airlines to grow the route and visitor numbers in both directions."
"By adding Chicago to the Air New Zealand route network, and with United's increased service between San Francisco and Auckland, we are proud to offer our customers more ways to get between the United States and New Zealand and more connection opportunities in those cities than any other airline in the world," said United's International Network Vice President Patrick Quayle. "Today's announcements are great examples of the customer benefits that result from the strong, strategic alliance and partnership between United Airlines and Air New Zealand."

Overall passenger volumes have grown as customers traveling from New Zealand to the U.S. connect to United's broad domestic network from its hubs in Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
