IAD-LHR - question on double upgrade & lounge access
GS here, using GPU to sit in BizFirst.
- Is CPU a possibility for Global First or would I have to use another GPU? If the latter, is it worth it? (what's the difference?)
- Looks like I'll be arriving in T2. I've heard the new Global First Lounge is for departures. Will I be able to use it? If not, what lounge would folks recommend for a shower? I'll be arriving at 6a and spending the day in London before returning to the airport in the evening.

No double upgrades using instruments unless you score an elusive op-up. You can probably pay $1000+ to upgrade to GF.
LHR has an excellent Arrivals by United lounge, specifically for this purpose. Look for the signs as you pass out of customs and immigration (it is landside). Good showers, excellent breakfast.

- What's an 'op-up' and is there anything I need to do to be eligible for it?
- Is the new departures lounge that I've heard about worth the extra work together to it? (compared to the arrivals one)

Not worth that at LHR given the pains and what you have to do to get back out.

IME Business Class is plenty adequate for such a short overnight flight.
Hopefully the OP is on the 10:00pm departure so there is a chance of sleeping on the flight.
