Another 789 cancellation today (Oct 29) UA 863 SFO-SYD cancelled due to maintenance. Return SYD-SFO on Oct 31 also cancelled.

It was scheduled as a 788. Must be a sub due to 772 shortage, never seen anything except 772s and 744s on that route (in recent years).

One of the SFO-LHR flights has been off and on a 78X since spring.

Perfect storm - it was 787-900 changed out for a 787-800 (so already 12 booted from J) and then it went out on maintenance. I was first to the rebook counter and as revenue ticket in J but even so told no seats on the Oct 30 flight so rerouting through LAX instead. It filled up quickly so I imagine a lot of unhappy people with longer than wanted stays on the West Coast!

The last cancellation of UA863 was on Oct 14. On that occasion the return UA 840 (SYD-LAX) was cancelled. More often than not when one of the west coast flights to SYD cancel it is UA 840 that is scrapped on the return. Interesting that on this latest 789 debacle it is UA 870 that is cancelled. I wonder what the reason is behind the UA decision as to whether to axe 870 or 840.

looks like they had a 744 crap out ... perhaps trying to swap in a 788 and that went MX as well. Definitely a bad run right now for UAs widebody reliability.

Almost always, the inbound to Sydney from SFO turns back to LAX and vice versa. My educated guess as to why it's different this time is because it was a equipment downgrade (787-800) and that aircraft was built into the system to go back to San Francisco versus having it Los Angeles.

10/30 UA 871 SFO-TPE (N197UA) departed at 1458 and returned to gate at 1512. Departed again at 1703, (3 hours 8 minutes late) and estimated to arrive at 2136, 2 hours 36 minutes late due to aircraft maintenance.

and the SYD woes continue.

UA flight 839 on 10/30 B789 cancelled due to required crew rest, therefore...
UA flight 840 on 11/1 B7789 also cancelled due to crew rest.

This is right on the heels of the SFO-SYD flight cancelling.

Totally unbelievable.

And there were many of us on this flight that were on the cancelled flight last night spending a second night in a hotel but this time in a different city. Chaos at the airport and an hour and a half just to get a hotel voucher. Weren't at hotel until 330am. Chaos

What level of UA executive attention is this 789 issue getting? This level of cancellation and disruption to a single route / pair of routes is ridiculous.

Are there any indications that the customer/fleet-responsible executives are being alerted to this issue beyond a "LAX-SYD on-time reliability has gone from xx% to yy% this month" kind of bland summary? Does anyone have a view on why these 789s seem to be "technically challenged"?

Flightstats.com shows UA 839 as having 1.9 out of 5.0 stars on time rating.
UA 863: 3.7 stars
