UA850 PEK-ORD. just slightly delayed now, but we're waiting for a pilot with "passport problems"! Sheesh.

20 minutes in. Now saying he'll be here "any minute".

"Any minute" = 20 to 30

Be glad they didn't say:

"5 to 10" = 30 to 40

or even worse:

"Shouldn't be too long" = 60+

40 minutes and counting.
At the hour point. The app is still showing "on schedule".
Just arrived. Doesn't look like he rushed.

...because he knew the plane wasn't going to leave without him!

UA 90 left with a 3 hour delay however, UA 845 B767 wasn't so lucky, IAD - GRU 767 went down last night for aircraft maintenance.

another 747 down for maintenance.

UA 59 FRA-SFO on 11/3

Also worth mentioning, a UA 789 went down for maintenance today at IAH, was supposed to fly to SFO so we will see if this results in a delay/cancelled SFO 787 flight later on in the day

The 789 down resulted in cancellation of UA1081 SFO-IAH

EWR to HKG full of passengers being delayed for some inoperable reading lights (won't turn on at the seat). Unbelievable.

The point was, I think, that there should be no difference in paid vs. points upgrade. At the time of CONFIRMED booking, they should be treated equally.
I wasn't going to respond but.... there were a substantial number of travellers stranded in the US for 2/3/4 days getting 3 hours sleep a night. Those who would have 'suffered' to accommodate them would have merely reverted to the seat they paid for.

The callousness of your position is undefendable IMHO but hey I believe in karma .

I have taken this (even more) off OT so mods feel free to delete my vent

Well, those who have a confirmed seat in business class HAVE paid for it, either by $$, or some combination of instrument(GPU, miles) and $$. Should the gate agent rank passengers by fare paid and class: F A J C D Z P? And then status:GS 1K P G S?

If you are feeling abused, and I agree the scenario of a three day delay sounds horrible, then you should take this up with United

...
I think his point is that when a seat is confirmed and there has been no mistake made about how it got there, then that *is* what they paid for.

The argument is that taking that paid-for seat away for some other displaced passenger would not be fair at that point.

I tend to agree. A paid for business class seat shouldn't be somehow treated differently from a paid for economy class seat.

Btw, if you're comfortable measuring what is ok to do based on relative inconvenience, then there are any number of additional things that would be justified to do based on someone having been stranded for 3 days.

And I think you're right, this is getting into a bit of political / OT / social discussion. It's like debating whether the rich can afford more taxes because you're only taking a little bit away from them to help others...

dollar plus a GPU is PAID - period

Dollars is paid - period

Doesn't matter how many dollars or how many whatevers you paid for it, it is paid, you have a seat.

Next thing will be they go by price of the seat, someone who paid $1500 for his seat will get bumped before the person who paid $1525 - that is dumb

If you have a seat in XX cabin, then you paid for it by some means, that should be the end of the conversation.

....
Well... in fact they do something akin to that, so let's leave that out of the debate for the moment
