UA Confirms they are Part of DoJ Investigation Into Price Fixing

http://www.wsj.com/articles/justice-...ion-1435775547

I don't know what is more disturbing -- that this investigation was announced yesterday, or that I seem to be the first person to start a thread about in on FT.

Seems like this would be front-page news here.

If DoJ determines there is merit to this case -- and ultimately finds UA guilty -- I'll be in line for the class action to recoup refunds from overcharging!

I just find this stupidly ironic since the DOJ is the body that approved all the mergers, and now they're probing this.

Anyone who took microeconomics freshman year of college and therefore knows about oligopolies should not be surprised in the least that collusion is a distinct possibility.

That said, all these mergers had to be approved by the government in the first place...not sure why they are surprised this was the outcome.

A couple of threads have been started, but they get transferred over to the Travel News forum.

It's going to be very difficult for DOJ to prove collusion. With an oligopoly such as exists here, you don't even have to collude with your "competitors" - you just match their moves and the anti-competitive effect is the same as if there were an overt agreement.

There were multiple threads started yesterday, but they were closed or moved elsewhere. And you find that "disturbing"?

While anti-trust behaviour is being investigated, "price fixing" as the title states is not. Perhaps the title should properly reflect that an investigation of capacity collusion, while if true, would likely impact prices, is not the same thing as an investigation into price fixing. That, to me is disturbing, that someone can sensationalize a headline into something that it isn't.

I wish I had liquid capital, looks like an opportunity to buy the sector (market went up yesterday, fuel prices dropped significantly, and airlines dropped a few points on this news, which IMHO, will not have a direct impact on future performance.) edit: I see they are rebounding already today, even with fuel up today and the market flat.

There is an existing discussion in Travel News about this subject and as this issue involves multiple U.S. airlines, I'll close this thread and encourage you to continue the discussion in this thread
