That would be a lot of premium-cabin flying for that single GPU...

In theory probably... but there are lots of caveats.

My mention of 4 hours or next flight is a fare rule (not an upgrade rule*), meaning if the actual fare was WAS-SAO (fares don't use airport codes) then you could legally fly it with a 12 hour connection in ORD. However, with an itinerary like that the cheaper fare could also be something like BRU-CHI-SAO-HOU. If there's a "natural" fare break at Chicago THEN the 12 hour layover could cause your trip to be considered two one ways. As you can see this is a grey area where the system, every agent (let alone the fare desk), and who knows who else could come to a different answer.

*P.S. the upgrade rule is one instrument per one way, but I've never seen it more specifically defined... While I've never heard of such a thing it's technically possible they have a separate definition of one-way for GPUs than they do for fare rules.

Sorry, misstated my issue - the 12 hour layover is in GRU as all flights arrive in the morning and leave in the evening after soaking up the sun all day. The underlying fare is a EU-GRU fare, so the one-way (based on the fare definition) would end in GRU.

I guess the deciding question would be if UA's IT interprets this connection as part of the outbound or (as per underlying fare) as the turning point...based on the reports here (the SYD-MEL upgrade report) both interpretations are possible, yet there is no way to know beforehand.

Greetings - Dirk

Using an RPU with a lap infant

I am about to make a booking with my 9 month old son, how loves flying, sleeps as soon as the engines spool up on takeoff, has flown 13 times.

My question is this:
My trip is showing R2 or more on all individual legs. Do I make the booking with the infant on it, then apply the RPU or do I make the booking, apply the RPU then add him to the booking?
It's from YOW to PHX, assuming you can use an RPU on a booking with a lap infant?

Any help or insight would be great

Thanks

Is an RPU good for one way or one segment

How many RPUs would I need for the following itinerary?

Ord-sfo-Ogg?

Need some clarifications

Thanks

Have 2 GPUs which expire 31Jan2015.
Upcoming trip outbound 20Jan, inbound 10Feb.

Unfortunately one GPU will go to waste, but do I have to up-purchase to W class on both legs in order to use the GPU only on the outbound? Or hold, and call to up-purchase to W on outbound and apply GPU instantly? (R is available) I don't seem to be able to choose W outbound and K inbound on .com

Thank you!

You can book different fare classes, such as W outbound and lower on the return. Nearly impossible to do online but easy for an phone agent to do.

Unfortunately I decided to quit UA and just stopped at 75k for 2015.
I will, thus, hold a K-K booking and call in to get a W-K.

Have you called to try and get the expiring GPU extended? with a booked flight they will probably extend it one month so you could use it. No guarantees but they have done it for others.

Hmm, didn't think they would grant an exception for non-1K requalifiers. But it's definitely worth a shot, seeing the inbound is just a couple of days after 31Jan. Thanks!

New Plat, have RPU's

If I want to head to OGG or HNL for a long weekend to get away can I redeem these on a say lax outbound flight? If so how do I do so? Let me guess I have to buy a crazy high coach ticket first right?

Thanks

Not at all, just do some research on R space using expert mode which is explained all over FlyerTalk.

Got it. Thank you. I just did a search and clicked the 'mileage plus award" button and sure enough R space showed. However it then said "27,500 miles". Is that in addition to an RPU? How do I apply it? Do I have to call an agent?
