So I did clear on the BOM-EWR leg, which is double good since we sat for two hours in BOM with the door closed so that they could work out a weight and wind issue.

I never appeared on the upgrade list. I got an email right about at t-24 saying the upgrade had cleared. On my EWR-DEN leg, same GPU, I was listed on the upgrade list- and this had cleared over a month ago.

Why does a cleared GPU show up on domestic flight but not for the international flight?

Something to do with UA not wanting to let on how many upgrades they are handing out?

Both EWR-BOM-EWR flights were full, big time. A few seats open IIRC. In the past, the return was almost always empty middle seats in Y. That makes a huge difference. I even had a three seat to myself once.

The seems to be a difference in behaviors between CPU eligible flights and non-CPU eligible flights (including PS flights). In CPU flights, all upgraded (via certs, miles and CPU will appear (YBM and $$$ upgrades not do). On non-CPU eligible flights, only those that clear at the gate appear on the list. Those that clear earlier do not. Suspect it is two different software modules that just work differently and no motivation to harmonize.

I've booked YN seats for myself and three family members for a DEN-HNL flight later this year. I don't have any United credit cards.

I can't use GPUs or RPUs to upgrade, correct? The kids are small and we have the two rows of two seats, and I don't consider this that long of a flight, so I'd rather not burn instruments anyways.

Am I eligible for a CPU? They wouldn't be dragged along with a CPU, correct? If I am CPU-able and they are not, how do I make sure that I just don't upgraded- or better yet convince my wife that there was nothing I could do and I'll see her in HNL?

No
Only elites with certain credit cards are eligible for CPU on award tickets.

Not really a usage question, but I thought this was the best place...I qualified today as a newly 1K, status is showing in my account-overview after logging out and the logging in again. However my GPU-counter is still zero - is there experience how fast they will show up in my account?

Greetings - Dirk

a few day or less.

So my GPUs showed up, and I used them to waitlist a previously bought itinerary where all segments where R0. After applying the GPU all segments showed the "upgrade requested" mark, and when looking at the seatmap the corresponding segments are listed twice, once allowing me to select seats in Economy and for the second time showing me seats in Business but not allowing me to select seats.

Today (a day after applying my GPU) I got an eMail from my travel-agency where I bought the ticket informing me of a schedule change, however all flights are exactly the same as before. When looking up my itinerary online I see that now the third segment has the "upgrade requested" mark gone and is still in listed as Economy. However for that segement (and only that segment) I am now able to select seats in Business.

Should I consider this as a sign that the upgrade already cleared on that segment? If so, will I still get an eMail or something actually confirming this? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Greetings - Dirk

Select the new seat and check you itin -- are you in R fare class and does the seat assignment stick? If so you are in.

BTW the "schedule change" was probably the TA's way for handling the upgrade notification they received from UA. In general when you use a TA the notices go to them and it is the TA's responsibility to notify you. That's the way communications are handled when you use a TA unless the TA tells UA otherwise.

The seat does stick, but the itinerary still shows V-class. As said I have all segments shown in the itinerary twice when I select seats, however only once in the itinerary itself...I also still see my original Eco-seat.

May be the case, I got something similar from Expedia once when my upgrade cleared, but then it actually showed the difference. May be a problem with the TA, though, as I got a pretty meaningless eMail from them...

If two tabs show up for the same flight segment, you are still waitlisted. You can sometimes choose a F seat, but it won't stick. When you go back in, you'll still see only your original economy seat still selected. When your upgrade goes through, one tab will disappear, leaving the one that only shows F seats as being selectable. Your itinerary will also show R and an "Upgrade confirmed" notation. If you don't see "Upgrade confirmed" or "R" anywhere, you have not been upgraded.

Seems you should be discussing this with the TA. They have control of the ticket until day of travel.

Seems this is the way to go. I researched a little further and found out that the upgrade has indeed confirmed, however since the "native" reservation is a) in a different GDS (Amadeus) and b) on an OAL-ticket, that native reservation currently has two enties for the same flight, one in confirmed business and one for the same flight in confirmed economy.

Seems that the TA must resolve this by clearing up the original reservation in Amadeus and revalidate the ticket manually to reflect the change made by the confirming upgrade...and that is probably what triggered the time-change eMail and also the fact that the reservation on united.com does not show up as in R-class.

I'm flying NRT-ORD-DCA and applied a GPU at booking, both upgrades waitlisted. ORD-DCA upgrade was just confirmed but I asked agent to remove GPU from this segment so I don't waste the GPU if NRT-ORD doesn't clear. She replied it would get taken care of at NRT if the upgrade doesn't clear? Does this sound right or a case of HUACA? Thanks!

No those were PMUA rules...it's one of the few actual enhancements since the merger. If the BF segment doesn't clear, you get the GPU back, even if the domestic F segment clears.

Thanks for the quick response! And do I get to keep the domestic upgrade as well or get booted back to coach?
