Hi FT,

I recently booked two tickets (same PNR) SJC-DEN-NRT-SIN. At booking, united.com lumped these flights together treating the routing as SJC-SIN with an 18 hour layover @ NRT.

My hope was to get two GPUs sponsored for the entire journey, but now when I check my reservation, United has broken out the NRT-SIN flight separately requiring 4 GPUs to upgrade 2 pax all the way. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this, or has United made the right move breaking out NRT-SIN?

UA849 SJC-DEN (0725-1100)
UA139 DEN-NRT (1220-1640 +1 Day)
NH111 NRT-SIN (1045-1730)

Thanks,
Longtime FT Lurker

Sorry, but that is correct under UA's rules.

While connections can be up to 24-hours on international itineraries, a break of more than 12-hours requires a second GPU.

It doesn't matter anyway. You can't use a GPU on an NH flight segment.

Thanks, I forgot that GPUs are only valid on UA & LH.

if I purchase a ticket that UA.com is pricing as a V for the nonstop TATL sector and an L for the one stop domestic sector (presumably two separate fare bases) will one GPU cover the whole thing? the layovers are all under 4 hours.

GPUs require minimum of W class as far as I know.

The TATL segment must be W or higher.

You can use the advanced search to force W or higher in the results.

I believe the domestic segment can be anything and GPU is still applicable to that segment.

GPUs can be used on all domestics, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, Northern South America (minus EWR-IAH/LIM), and Intra-Asia/Oceania (minus NRT-BKK/SIN and HNL-GUM) routes for all fares.

GPUs are worthless to me. It is way to hard to get them to fill

Now with two RPUs I just recently was upgraded on EVERY leg EWR to MNL!
The 1k line assisted me and she was not sure of some legs, but they filled

EWR-IAH
IAH-HNL
HNL-GUM(YES, this filled)
GUM-MNL

MNL-GUM
GUM-HNL
HNL to EWR

can upgrades be traded without charges? because I would be willing to make GPU for RPU deals

If you can access it, you may be able to trade those in FlyerTalk's coupon connection.

I have never used a GPU to upgrade a GPU-required flight, since I would have to buy a W-or-higher fare. I usually end up using them to upgrade EWR-HNL, when I've run out of RPUs.

I'm about to buy a NRT-GUM-HNL ticket, I wonder if I will be as lucky as you were and upgrade it with an RPU. According to the seat maps both flights are using the new Hawaii configuration plane.

correct, so would a single GPU cover the entire trip in this case?

(Europe->US hub) in V -> (US hub->US spoke) in L

where hub-hub and hub-spoke connections are <4hrs.

Hi PV_Premier, yes--in this case the GPU would cover the entire leg on the trip, all else being equal. Please PM me if this does not appear to be the case and we can look into it.

If you have already upgraded a domestic trip to R with an RPU, can you switch to a flight with R1 and retain the upgrade?

I was flying PHX-IAH-EWR-BOS and saw an earlier flight IAH-BOS skipping EWR. I decided not to mess with but I was thinking if i switched to the other flight if I could keep my upgrade?

I had a mechanical on the outbound and was able to keep my F seat when i switched to a later flight but wasn't sure if its the same if a voluntary change.

Cancelling RPUs within 24 hour window?

Has anyone tried to redeposit RPUs within the 24 hour window? What happened? I fear that the whole "removing someone from the airport control waitlist" thing is hard for phone agents and they'll run into trouble redepositing.

I have a situation right now where my flight is R0, but I know that at 24 hours R will open up. I will get waitlisted, and I fear that agents I call won't be willing to clear me manually. I feel much more confident if I'm applying a new RPU that they'll clear me immediately. If no one has had issues redepositing at T < 24 hours, then I'm fine. Otherwise, I'm considering redepositing before the 24 hour window so I don't get put on the airport control waitlist.
