Announcement 27 March 2012

Hi Everyone, obviously I'm a lilttle late to the game here, but, as you can see, today we’ll officially be introducing the new United MileagePlus Club Card. I know there’s been speculation on this, and I’m sure there will be follow-up questions. To start, here are some key highlights of the United MileagePlus Club Card:
  • As the card name suggests, a full United Club membership is included. If you already have a United Club membership, once approved for the card, you’ll be refunded for any unused portion of your membership as long as the refund is $15 or more (the refund is applicable to annual and three year memberships)

  • There are some key benefits, too. Just like our Presidential Plus Card, the new Club Card is designed to enhance your total travel experience. Here’s a list of the benefits (details for each can be found here):
  • Earn 50% more miles on ALL purchases. This is a new benefit. Cardmembers will earn at least 50% more miles on all purchases with the new Club Card. Specifically, for each $1 spent, Cardmembers will earn 1.5 miles, and when purchasing United tickets, the miles jump to 2 miles for every $1 spent on tickets
  • Free first and second standard checked bags for the Cardmember and one companion
  • Premier Access travel services, including priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling
  • Book award tickets close to the departure date without a fee. We’ll waive the fee for booking award tickets 21 days or less prior to departure. This benefit is reserved for certain Cardmembers and certain Premier levels
  • Get complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members). Cardmembers who are also Premier members will be eligible to receive their complimentary upgrade benefits (where available) even when traveling on an award ticket in economy class
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Cardmembers will have access to last-seat award availability (applicable to general members)
  • As a Cardmember, miles don’t expire
  • Invitation to special Avis benefits and Hyatt Platinum Elite status
  • Inside Access from Chase. As a Cardmember, you will be delighted with opportunities to attend private, curated, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Visit InsideAccess.com to learn about upcoming events
  • Access to the Chase’s Luxury Hotels and Resorts Collection special rates and benefits
  • Premier travel and purchase protection, including primary auto rental collision damage coverage
  • 24/7 Concierge Services

For those of you who already have a credit card with Chase, here’s some more information:

  • Already have a Mileage Plus Club Visa Card? You’ll find that the key differences are that the new Club Card has the added benefits of free checked bags, Premier Access, 50% mileage bonus on all purchases, award tickets close to departure date without a fee and complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members where available). The new Club Card does not award Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases. More specific information about your current card and the new Club Card will arrive in the mail in late April

  • Already have the Presidential Plus Card? The key difference is that the Presidential Plus Card awards Flexible Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases whereas the new Club Card awards a 50% mileage bonus on all purchases. Both cards earn 2 miles for every $1 spent on United tickets. If you’re interested in changing over to the new Club Card, simply call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options. While the Presidential Plus Card and its benefits will continue, we are not taking any additional applications for new Presidential Plus accounts

  • Already have another United card from Chase? If you currently have another United card from Chase and want to switch, call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options

For a full list of details, and to apply for the new Club Card, please visit MileagePlusClub.com.

As always, please let us know your questions.

How long after applying for the card before I have UC access?
Chase / UA states (Offer Details)
Please allow 2 weeks after account open date for the United Club membership to activate
but it usually is quicker. At UCs, much of the time they will see it in under a week. *A lounges may require the physical card which may take 4-6 weeks. Those accepting the virtual card should work about the same as UCs.

Thanks Shannon! I will say that I am dissapointed with the new card and features and will most likely migrate back to the AMEX Plat Card. I waited to see it improve, however, it doesn't look like it is going to happen.

Caught something interesting while browsing award tickets on .bomb today (emphasis added via a red square):

However, clicking that link went to https://www.theexplorercard.com/MPClub95SC.aspx?v_ctrk=TTOP$0-1229-2742-2-1114&cell=SXL which clearly states you get a $95 statement credit, not the first year free as advertised. I was thinking about it if the first year was actually free (like the PPlus card was when it first came out and I regretfully passed on) but not for the credit. Little disappointed in the false advertising :/

While I'm not going to bite, this is at least, in my opinion, a better card for 1k members than the PPlus card. The 1.5x miles are better than the FlexEQMs, unless you're in a unique position where you plan on banking loads and using them to maintain status on an off travel year.

With the elimination of FEQMs usage to reach 100K+ levels last year it was yet another "nonefit" for elite members who hold the card. Much like free baggage, premier access, etc.

Speaking of the FlexEQMs, we were told that we'd see a breakdown on ua.com of when the different FEQMs in our accounts expired (and which were grandfathered as never expiring). Not a huge deal given all the other integration issues, but is this still planned?

I am seeing the same offer and get the same result when I click through - a $95 statement credit. While the address of the link is not quite the same as yours, it does include www.theexplorercard.com....... but the graphic is of the MileagePlus Club Card. Why the false advertising, or is the website not doing what UA intends it to do?

Does anyone know if you actually need to charge a plane ticket on the new Club card to get the Premier Access benefits? I'm not a sufficiently frequent traveler to even obtain Premier status every year. I do, however, have the old MP Signature Visa that provides EQM. So it seems to me that I could charge my tickets on the old card for the EQM if I can still get the Premier Access benefits from the new Club card without actually charging the tickets on the new card. Thoughts?

This problem has now been fixed. The clickthru page now says that the first year is free and this is also shown in the T&C.

If the other cards are anything to go off of, the benefits are linked to your MileagePlus number, not to a card used for the purchase.

I would say "welcome" but it appears youve been around for two years. I suppose a "happy first post" may be in order.

+1

The loss of 25% bonus miles was it for me. Looks like a $250 membership for me and no card.

So it has...now to decide if it's worthwhile w/out the PQMs...

I already made the switch in December. Don't need to cancel the PP until June but now that I see the details I probably will.

Can you post a URL for the first year free offer? The one posted in this thread continues to direct to a $95 credit, rather than the full year credit.

Chase will want to fix that quickly. That's an Unfair and Deceptive Acts and Practices enforcement action waiting to happen.

Thanks, Shannon! ^

Quite an interesting card...I will chew on it a bit but the lack of FEQM's on the new card is really lacking...not that I have had to use them yet but it is nice to have 5-figures worth in the queue if I slow down on my flying. Melikey the 50% mileage bonus...hmm...took me a year to decide on the PPlus, so it might take as long with this one. I would jump on it if there was some sort of sign-up bonus, but these club cards never come with one...c'est la vie.

Sorry, my MP Visa Select looks better and better: 3x @ United.com, 2x @ gas/groceries/home/dining/home improvement, 5K RDM @ anniversary, 5K PQM's/yr @ United.com. All for $95.
