Eh. I don't think it makes a difference which flight the friends are on.

It does for anyone else waiting ;-) Check-ins for separate flights take longer than checking 3 people in for the same flight (even if not on the same PNR).

Any new GS receive welcome kits or anything in the snail mail describing their new bene's? All I have seen to date is the email invite. Just doesn't feel "official" yet. What do they actually send?

May keep my GS-light status after all... need to decide if I'll do the $15K challenge they just sent me.

The cool thing this year is until March 3, I could do "GS runs" as a GS. Last year I took the challenge and one of my transpac SWUs didn't clear when flying as a 1K.

When inviting Global Services members, we consider multiple factors, including an extraordinary contribution to 2011 flight revenue on United and Continental®. Based on this measure, your account activity in 2011 does not qualify you for membership.

However, because we value your relationship with United, we'd like to provide you an exclusive opportunity to regain Global Services membership in 2012.

You can regain 2012 Global Services membership by doing the following:
Purchase and fly at least US$15,000 in flights operated by United, United Express®, Continental, Continental Connection or Continental Express.
Complete all of your qualifying flights within 90 days of January 30, 2012. All flights must be posted to your MileagePlus® or OnePass® account to qualify
Once you qualify, you'll receive Global Services membership for the 2012 program year.
Thank you for your continued loyalty to United. We look forward to welcoming you on board soon.

Best regards,

Your dedicated Global Services team

In 2009, my spend was ~20K, but I had an "auto-requal" for the 2010 year, because I flew about 60K full-fare miles and they offered re-qual to anybody with 50+K full-fare miles.

In 2010, again I flew ~60K full-fare miles and spent ~20K, and changed my home airport from RNO to LAS, but they didn't make me the "fly 50K full fare miles to automatically requalify," and no, I didn't requalify for 2011.

But in January 2011, I asked for and was offered a challenge (spend $12K on UA metal in 90 days), which I completed, and by April 2011 I'd regained my GS status.

I have no clue yet if I've requalified for 2012. I called yesterday and the agent said she/they didn't know yet either (she blamed it on the merger). My 2011 spend was about $30K (most ever for me), all on F, A, C, D, Y and B fares (not a single "non-premium" fare).

This is why my profile says "GS light," btw.

Very happy about receiving the following, to bad for UA that they didn't tell me about this 2 weeks ago as I've already taken a DL challenge and booked 40K Paid A tickets. At least I can look to see if the "grass is greener on the other side" with my own eyes.

I just got my re qualification email for GS. I did fail in the previous rounds and the united merger update site already (and still) shows me as 1K.
It seems like they finished their next round of qualifications today and I made it without a challenge.
As somebody else above I do already have an ANA flight in C now in February because I was not expecting to get it for 2012 after the United Merger Site information.

Any GS experience with international op-ups?

Just curious how often (if at all) GS get op-uped from C to F cabins on international when they don't use SWUs? I have 5-6 paid C fare transpac and transatlantic a year and only 3 trips worth of SWUs, so just wondering if they ever bump GS from C to F on these...
I haven't ever seen an empty F seat, so just wondering if they ever opup at the gate for GS

If anyone has any experience with this, what are some common routes that get the bump?

Depends upon the loads, but sure, I have seen op-ups from C to F. LHR, AMS and CDG come to mind. They will (usually) take a 1K full C before a GS D, for example.

Doesn't happen to me, as I usually have already upgraded to F.

I've been Opup on Z fares quite a few times, and even double upgraded on a MUC-ORD flight a few years ago W->NC->NF IME most stations handle GS well.

I am jealous. I fly SFO:KIX almost monthly on Z fares and I get an op-up about twice a year - some years less. Bummer is that SWU are not valid on Z fares so I forfeit about 10-12 of these each year.

Yep - if there was one benefit that I really wish they would add to GS (actually to all 1K) it would be to allow SWUs on Z fares at least on day of departure. I can't see where that would encourage masses to stop buying F tickets and it would allow some benefit to those of us who buy a lot of Z fares (versus buying a cheaper coach fare and using the SWU to get to biz). In fact, once I lose GS status one of these days (but will be a 1K for life) I will probably spend less on UA since I will use coach+SWU with careful planning in place of some purchases that would otherwise be Z.

Didn't receive an email - but when I checked in for my first intl flight of the year - there was GS Global Services on it. I tried to call the 1K line when I had a flight issue on the trip and they said it had to be transferred - to "Global Executive Services". Not sure if this is part of the combined rebranding or if it was always called this.
