There was a recent discussion on the BA board that there is a small discount to be had by using a Virgin Atlantic PNR; found it.

If you're not travelling to London at peak morning hours during the week, consider using the Southern service to Victoria or the First Capital Connect service to London Bridge, Blackfriars or St Pancras, depending on your destination in London. Fares are about one third cheaper than the GEX with the journey taking about five to ten minutes longer, at least on Southern trains to Victoria.

Re above .... book by 31 Jan but you can travel until 31 March

Well, using the time-honoured method of randomly typing in airline names after the domain, it appears that http://www.gatwickexpress.com/aurigny will give you an 11% discount. There's a few on 10%, too.

If you must use the Gatwick Express (FCC is just as fast and better if you're headed to the City or the East End), a useful ticket option is an anytime day single from Gatwick Airport to Boundary Zone 4 (7.50) and a day travelcard for zones 1-4 (10 for travel before 0930 and 7.30 thereafter or any time on weekends). It's cheaper than a single (17.90) in any case, and if you are able to get the 7.30 travelcard option, it is also cheaper than a return (30.80). Furthermore, it includes unlimited travel for the day on train, tube, and DLR services within London zones 1-4, and on all London red bus services.
This cannot however be purchased online or at vending machines, only at ticket windows. The ticket window is obliged to sell you the combination if you ask for it but is not obliged to offer it proactively.

Great way of saving money on the Gatwick Express: don't use it. Use the First Capital Connect service to London Bridge, Blackfriars, City Thameslink, Farringdon, or St Pancras, or the slightly slower Southern service to Victoria or London Bridge. The Gatwick Express provides negligible time-saving for a substantial extra cost.

The downside is that it stops at Clapham Junction and East Croydon, adding less than ten minutes to a 30 minute trip. To my mind, no biggie given the cost saving. Also, depending where you are going in London, Clapham Junction might suit you better.
