If on the usual westerly arrivals, and arrivals are on 27L, Myrtle Avenue is always a good spot. It is only a few minutes walk from Hatton Cross tube station. You may have to bring your own beer though.

Runway alterernation schedule can be found here http://www.heathrow.com/noise/heathr...ay-alternation

Thanks all for the very helpful replies. Some great suggestions and photos.

We will see which way the wind blows when we arrive (quite literally) and decide accordingly.

You want the 490 if you're coming from or going to t5 (i.e. if you're not going back to your hotel). There will be other buses which go as far as Hatton cross and you can get the tube there too without paying. The 490 goes right past the pub but you'll have to pay a single fare unless you walk from Hatton cross. You'll only see anything if the planes are landing on the southern runway.

The tube is not free from any of T5/T123/T4 stations to Hatton Cross. It is only free within the airport, or if you need to head to T4 you can get a tube to Hatton Cross and stay tubeside to switch to a T4 bound tube. If you exit at Hatton Cross you pay.

The 423 and 490 are free from T5 to Hatton Cross.

Arrivals that afternoon were coming in on 27R so we went for the Premier Inn in the end. Some fantastic views and a nice pint. Would highly recommend it!
