Welcome to the relevant thread of retrieving lost items at IST after leaving Istanbul.
Before you post, it's strongly advised that you read the WIKI.
A reminder before you start posting:
- FlyerTalk has no responsibility if your item is stolen, damaged by the member, seized by the customs, lost during shipment, etc...
- The member has no responsibility if the item is lost, damaged, stolen, seized by customs.
- If you realize that the member who helps is a fraud, unfortunately, you would not have anything to do if your item is stolen or you have paid shipment fees to him/her. In these cases FlyerTalk and the member helping has no responsibility.
- Not all members from Turkey has the requirement to help someone, please do not PM someone until you have confirmation from him/her at this thread.
If you agree to the statements above, start reading step 1.
Step 1: Identifying if your item is found
Before you post, please e-mail or call the relevant department;
If you dropped your item in;
- Onboard a TK flight ( Domestic ) - E-mail [email protected]
- Onboard a TK flight ( International ) - E-mail [email protected]
- At the airport ( landside, domestic airside, domestic and international baggage claim hall ) - Fill out the form here
- At the airport ( international departures and transit hall, before passport control at the arrivals level ) - You need to contact Turkish Customs
Check the color of your situation and post details about your case here including the color of your situation.
When you find someone willing to help proceed to step 2
Step 2: Follow the relevant paths for the cases ( Person who needs help )
Orange Path
1- After finding someone who will to help, please PM or e-mail him/her and provide your report number ( something like BE-2019-XXXXX ) to that person and request his/her full name.
2- Then send an e-mail to the relevant e-mail address ( [email protected] ) with your passport photo page and one of the following ( boarding pass, e-ticket copy ) and write a petition letter then you approve that the member who will help pick up your item. Include the full name of the member picking up your item in your petition. Forward the answer from the relevant department to the member who will help.
3- Provide the member, your full address ( if you want it shipped ) or arrange a pickup point. If you decide your item to be shipped be aware that the member might request you to pay the shipment and customs fee ( when applicable ) so discuss how would you pay the member.
Blue Path
1- After finding someone who will to help, please PM or e-mail him/her and provide your lost and found reference number to that person and request his/her full name.
2- Then reply to the e-mail you received with your passport photo page and write that you approve that someone else would pick up your item. Include the full name of the member picking up in your e-mail.
Red Path
No one would like to deal with customs so mostly you would need to figure it on your own. If you find a member that would be happy to help, PM him/her.
Step 2: Follow the relevant paths for the cases ( Person who will help )
Orange Path
( If you decide to pick up the item after arriving from a flight, skip steps 5 to 8, instead read step 7p ).
1- Be sure to have the member's report number and provide him/her your full name so he/she could include in his/her petition.
2- Wait for the e-mail that the member would forward to you. Don't go to the airport before you have written confirmation that you have the right to pick up his/her item.
3- Don't go pick up the item before you both agree with shipping/pickup information. Exchange payment information ( IBAN, Swift, PayPal, Venmo, etc... ) if you would request money for the shipment.
4- Inform the member the cost of shipping [estimate] ( if you want the money of shipment ) and wait for the member to send the money. Then go to the airport
5- When you enter the Istanbul Airport terminal, go to the arrivals level and proceed to the relevant (Domestic/International) Information desk. Call the lost&found department from the phone over there. Someone would come to buzz you inside the baggage claim hall.
6- When entering the baggage claim hall, the police would ask for your ID ( ID, driver's license, passport ) and hold it until you leave the hall. Before you hand your ID to the police, the ground staff would take a picture of it and send it to the lost&found desk for verification.
7- When you arrive at the lost&found desk, provide the reference number to the employee, pick the item, and sign the documents. Then an agent would escort you out the hall, do not leave the hall by yourself if you are picking an item from the international lost&found office.
7p- ( If you arrive as a passenger ) When you arrive at the lost&found desk at the baggage claim hall, provide the reference number to the employee, present your ID, pick the item, and sign the documents.
8- Reclaim your ID from the police.
9- If the member has agreed his/her item to sent by UPS, proceed to the departures level and hand his/her item to UPS, pay the relevant amount of shipping and take the receipt. Provide the tracking number to the member. If you or the member prefers his/her item to be sent by local post ( PTT ) or another shipping company, or you would meet in person, you may leave the airport
10- If the member prefers shipping his/her item to sent by local post ( PTT ) or another shipping company, send the item and provide the tracking number to the member.
11- Refund the remaining money to the member if your shipping costs were lower than what he/she sent to you.

I lost it on my flight from istanbul to oslo on December 7th. After much back and forth where they asked for my password they said they have it and gave a confirmation number
I have talked to them via email but they are not very helpful. does anyone here know how to set up a UPS pickup

As far as I know UPS couriers can not get in custom regulated areas to do any pick up. You need to pick your item yourself or ask somebody to do it for you. WIKI has all the details. Good luck!

Why do they enlist UPS? They sent me this email and told me to arrange for a pickup with UPS but it seems to be difficult.

"Please kindly be advised that you may also authorise a cargo company by giving them the registration number. You have to inform us about the cargo company who is authorized by you.You have to give a power of attorney from notary to the cargo company to receive the lost item, including your passport photocopy, boarding pass or ticket printout."

I live in Norway, and I was merely traveling through IST airport. I don't think I'm able to pick it myself or I if someone I know can.

I don't know what to do in this situation

Dear rozy , I am way too late in saying this but thank you so much for your help in getting my phone back from the Lost and Found Office at IST.

So I was travelling from Berlin to Jakarta through Istanbul, and I stupidly left my phone in the seat pocket of the first leg. Just a very quick reminder guys, always always check every of your belongings because to retrieve your missing or left items can be quite a hassle and in my case, if I didn't find Rozy, I was ready to just give my phone up.

I realised that I had left my phone while I was walking around the IST airport waiting for the next flight, immediately asked some personnel to check if my phone was still in the plane but they said it was already gone. Some other personnel told me that I could go to the Lost and Found Office but when I told them I only had an hour before my next flight, they just shaked their heads and said one hour is not enough. Like wow, how far is this office could be?

As soon as I arrived in Jakarta, I went to the Lost and Found Office there to report the missing item. Turkish Airlines responded fairly quickly to all my emails, always within an hour or so. Long story short, they advised me to use UPS, but when I talked to UPS they said because of the company policy, they can't ship personal effect, I didn't really get it but basically I couldn't have UPS retrieve my phone in IST.

I was giving up when I googled literally 'how to retrieve missing item from Istanbul airport' and got to this forum page and found Rozy. It was a bit weird asking a total stranger to clean up my mess and also to trust that they won't run away with my phone, but it was that or not trying at all. I am just now so grateful that there are people like Rozy who would actually spend their time and energy helping strangers like me.

I have my phone back now, Rozy sent it to Berlin with DHL soon after she retrieved it from the Lost and Found Office, which makes me feel even more embarassed for taking such a long time to make this appreciation post. Thank you once again rozy , and I wish you a very very good 2020 and beyond. And to all of you reading this, may 2020 be the year where we all remember to get all our stuff in the planes.

Hi all - I wanted to share my recent experience after I left an iPad on the plane at Istanbul airport. After reading through this forum, I reached out to Rozy for help, and she responded very quickly. Over the last week, she was able to retrieve the laptop and ship it to me here in the US. I had pretty much given up any hope of getting the iPad back, and feel so lucky to have found someone who is ready to selflessly help strangers like this.

Rozy - thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

hello Rozy (or anyone else that can help)
Last week I was flying home with my kids; when changing flights in Istanbul towards SFO I left my ipad on the plane. There was no time to go back when I realized (our plane was about to take off)
I reached out to the lost and found and they have it, I have a BE* registration number.
I was wondering if you or anyone else can help retrieve it. If so can we PM details ? Thanks so much !

Hello Rozy,

I have the same problem as many others. I lost my mobile phone at Istanbul Airport. I received a message from the Lost and Found Service that I can pick up my mobile phone there. Unfortunately I don't have the opportunity to pick it up there personally. Is it possible to contact me to get my mobile phone back?
Thanks so much.

Hi guys,

Is there an email adress for Turkish Customs?

(For items left in the transit area of IST...)

All I found is [email protected] - and the email is not working.

Thanks
