There was no sign up at CGK, but the check-in lady said she couldn't guarantee the seat next to me would remain empty as they were selling upgrades CGK IST for IDR4million, around $250.

At that price I can definitely see myself getting weak.

Well, yes - it passes my test of equivalence to the cost of a night in a nice hotel. OK, a very nice hotel

Though I can see why they might not want to put up a sign - it might upset those paying an awful lot more for a business-class ticket, or (even worse!) suggest it might be better in future to buy economy and chance an upgrade.

Anyone know if a paid upgrade is available (assuming space is available) if I book an award ticket (with Miles&Smiles)?

Thanks!

TK were selling upgrades at the check in counter of NRT - IST for 85.000 YEN. Last year they were selling the same for only 70.000 so I guess things are going well since they increased the price. Anyway I took it since it is a very long haul flight and was on a super cheap promo ticket (the special offer when buying tickets using the mobile app). The best 85000 yen spent ever!

Wife is flying from atl to Istanbul tomorrow night on a united airlines award ticket. Any possibility of a paid business class upgrade at check in? What do they usually charge?

No upgrade for her as it’s a UA ticket.

Why does it matter? I’ve seen signs at ist airport at check in before that says paid upgrades are available. And I know people on UA award tickets have upgraded before...

I find the $999 and $1299 upgrade rates for North America flights a little high. Especially if your final destination is not Turkey, upgrades from economy to business for the full itinerary sometimes cost less than $1299.
