Where did you get the map maker from?

It's the wikipedia blank world map (SVG). You can edit the CSS to color in by ISO country code.

Ok, I think I've found the right portion of the code you're supposed to edit(?). So what do I do now?

* Color a few countries:
*
* .gb, .au, .nc
* {
* fill: #ff0000;
* }

Yep.. like that. though the smaller ones you want the circle.

/*
* Additional style rules
*
* The following are examples of colouring countries. You can substitute these with your own styles to colour the countries on the map.
*
* Color a few countries:
*
* .gb, .au, .nc
* {
* fill: #ff0000;
* }
*
* Color a few small country circles (and the countries):
*
* .ms, .ky
* {
* opacity: 1;
* fill: #ff0000;
* }
*
*/
/*
lime = single
light = multiple
red = transit
yellow = daytrip
orange = pending
*/

.ad { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;andorra */
.ae { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;UAE */
.af { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;afghanistan */
.ag { opacity:1; fill: red } /* c;antiqua */
.al { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;albania */
.am { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;armenia */
.an { opacity:1; fill: green } /* antillies */
.ar { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;argentina */
.at { opacity:1; fill: yellow } /* c;austria */
.au { opacity:1; fill: green } /* c;australia */
.aw { opacity:1; fill: green } /* aruba */

Thanks, that sounds like an ok option if a transit visa to a flight out of Ashgabat is not doable.

If you don't mind sharing, which agency did you book the "tour" through and was it expensive?

Used the first one, Ashgabat Syyahat.

As for price, I believe it was around USD300 for 4 nights at AkAltyn hotel, airport pickup, and border drop off, plus invite letter, payable with wire transfer, and some in cash on arrival.

For example, Stantours wanted like 4x the price. Their services in the region looked way overpriced, period. I used Advantour in Uzbekistan, they were amazing, and have multi day scheduled tours if you are actually into staying more than a day in a country and not just ticking it off a list, and also can help you with Turkmenistan stuff.

7 day Visa was at ASB airport on arrival, separately, and it was a piece of cake.

This was however, 4 years ago, so there may be other options now.

Not sure if the level of FT traffic caused the server to fail, but it's currently showing an error. I'm quite interested in copying you...

Is it the same company? Even if not, looks good.
Like I said, I have no idea, if my company is still around - its been 4 years.
I suggest the poster emailing a few of the local companies and seeing what they offer - just stay away from the crooks at stantours.

That's a wonderful article even if he does leave Italy off of his list of best culture destinations and even if he doesn't think a country visit "counts" without a passport stamp. He wouldn't do too well trying to visit Schengen Europe today!

He took some really crazy risks.

Yes, must have some epic tales, Paris to Peking via North Africa in the 60's must be worth a book or two at least!

Just an e-book coming out next month that interviews 30+ people that have visited every country in the world. Should be interesting:

Interesting article on the quasi-country, South Ossetia. The Russians recently signed a treaty giving them control of defence and the borders, and have started putting a razor wire, sand-bagged gun positions and observation towers, cutting off families from their land and villages:
