What a trip down memory lane. I lived in Chittagong about 10 years ago, and I recognize many of the locations in your very well done pictures. The ship-breaking is a truly majestic thing to watch, but also horrible for the environment and the jobs are utterly dangerous. We were able to go into one of the yards to see it a little more up close, but even when it was more “touristy” they were still hesitant about pictures. I have a clear memory of standing below a beached half open cargo ship and being overwhelmed by how small I felt.
In fact, our apartment building was on O.R. Nizam road, just a 5-10 min walk up the road from where the Well Park is (IIRC, that didn’t exist 10 years ago or at least was overshadowed by the Peninsula Hotel across the street). There’s a fascinating War Cemetery just next to the hotel, it’s too bad you didn’t go there, it’s a piece of quiet in an otherwise noisy city. So many memories.
Thank you for a wonderful trip report, and for capturing Chittagong very well with your camera. It makes me realize that maybe I should get back there one of these days.

Daniel, this was again one of your awesome TRs, with all the people photos that you do amazingly well. And as others have said, who ever thinks about what happens to ships - now I know!
you and the family be well

Thanks for another great TR from you.
I was thinking it was a bit risky of you to be travelling just now, then I saw the date on the boarding pass! I liked the contrast in photos between the modern hulk of a ship and the wee traditional boat. And wow at the pics of the ships being broken up but
at the oil in the water it has then created with what appears to be nothing being done about it.

Many thanks, nequine
. Yes, a bit of an environmental disaster. Must be pretty rough on the workers health too

A very nice discovery to be honest.
How strong does that smell at shipbreaking yards?
Unrelated to this specific TR, but do you know how many photos at max can be put on a single post before some are automatically cut out by the website upon posting?
In this TR, you embeded 90 pics per post on 2 posts, while your other TRs vary from 45 to 70 pics with 10+ posts. Has the limit been increased recently?
Many thanks for sharing

Great trip, and great photos of the ship being broken. I guess it is an interesting environmental conundrum, after all it is a recycling operation but it is highly polluting.
I think your days of buying fridge magnets might be over (I speak from experience... father of four between 40 and 20), it is dresses and toys for Hannelie now! Those days will come back before you know it!

Thanks for posting this, your already excellent photography skills seem to have gone up yet another notch in this trip report. It's also pretty rare to see a TR featuring Bangladesh.

I read this review and really enjoyed it, so I started to read the other reviews in your list. Over the last week, I've read them all, often spending hours per day going through them. What incredible work - it made me long for the world as it was a few months ago and distracted me from the difficult world we currently find ourselves in. Thanks for all your hard work!
