Taipei Hotels

Just tried to book a hotel in Taipei for June, and my first few choices of hotels were sold out! (I hope Comdex or similar computer show is not there then!!!). Any advice on hotels in Taipei? We'd like a nice hotel with pool and/or Spa less than $200/night. Hyatt, Shangri-La and the Nikko are sold out. All help would be appreciated.

I usually stay at the Hyatt - I really like that property - If I remember correctly, there is a nice Sheraton in Taipei. I did not like the Hilton proprty at all - kazman

I too usually go for the Hyatt at WTC here. The Grand Formosa Regent is also quite a nice hotel and NOT cheap, but well situated in the center of town. They have a great gym and a rooftop pool but it too is likely to be a tough ticket at this time. Best of luck!

Gabby: They are sold out for June of 2000? Wow. I would try Sheraton Lai-Lai or Ritz Taipei (no relation with Ritz Carlton).

yes JUNE 2000!!!
Can you believe it?? I did manage to book at the Sheraton Lai Lai...is it comparable to the Hyatt?
I also booked at the Westin, has anyone seen this hotel, it is only opening in November.
Are either of these hotels well located?

It's been a couple of years, but I recall the same problem. The Grand Hyatt was full and I ended up at a decent nearby hotel called Dynasty. It was basic business class, but no complaints.

A bit of a story. I was the scheduled speaker at a conference at the Hyatt. My name was actually up in lights in the lobby.

But the organizers didn't handle my room reservation right. My partner was also a speaker and he was given a palatial penthouse suite. The Hyatt hostesses were very apologetic about the error and promised me a free suite next time. But I haven't been back to Taipei since.

Sheraton Lai Lai is "loosly" comparable (size and probably price), but just a tad below the Regent, Ritz, Grand Hyatt and Hilton.

As I recall there was no towers section there (SLL), I think! It is actually closer to the city center if that is important. If I'm not mistaken, they actually have/used to have a "ladies floor!" It may have been recently remodeled as well.

The Westin may be a good choice to consider too! Especially if it is open for six months prior to your visit!

Gabby, I stayed at the InterContinental this past April (United had a $471 e-fare from SFO, so I went for the weekend...and the miles!). I was able to use some United 1/2-price hotel certificates, so it came to about $120/night.

By the way: if you haven't been before, the National Palace Museum is terrific - well worth a whole day. They took all the good stuff when they left the mainland!

I was disappointed by the markets on a Sunday, but Lungshen Temple was a great visit - very colorful, and full of locals paying their respects.

I've never personally stayed there, but it is actually WAY up north of the SYS freeway near the Martyrs Shrine so the rates may be a little lower. I have heard that quality-wise it is comparable to the Sheraton.

If you are a swimmer, the Grand Hotel has a 100 meter pool with about 20 lanes. An amazing aquatic statement. Taxis are cheap to get downtown, and the Grand's lobby is as peerless as the pool.

After the news of the earthquake today in Taipei & surrounding areas, you better check that any of these hotels are still standing.
