It's been a couple of years, but I recall the same problem. The Grand Hyatt was full and I ended up at a decent nearby hotel called Dynasty. It was basic business class, but no complaints.

A bit of a story. I was the scheduled speaker at a conference at the Hyatt. My name was actually up in lights in the lobby.

But the organizers didn't handle my room reservation right. My partner was also a speaker and he was given a palatial penthouse suite. The Hyatt hostesses were very apologetic about the error and promised me a free suite next time. But I haven't been back to Taipei since.
