United Meals
I have an idea for a topic. Let's post brief reviews of various menu items served so we'll all know what to order and what to skip. I'll go first.
Airline-UAL
Item-First Class; Salmon with Horseradish Crust.
Review-Dry, Tasteless, Inedible.

Has anyone ever attempted to eat that cheesecake that CO offers in First Class? While the main part of the meals range from so-so to fairly passable I can't understand why they continue to serve that jelled mass at the end of the meal.

Yup, I've had that cheesecake (though not for a very long time. The last time was in 1995. I usually fly longer flights with them for meal service, so it's either the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies or ice cream sundaes, both of which are quite tasty.
I've been pleasantly surprised at most of CO's seafood. It's tough to make seafood survive the rigors of travel. I once had their pasta and salmon dish (evening EWR-MCO), and it was excellent.

Returning to United Meals:
Although I was a bit confused by why UA was running the recent Taste of Chicago promotion (is it still going on?) it seemed to me that those meals were a bit better, or may just more interesting, than standard fare.
Or maybe it was just the different "packaging".
In any case, the Eli's Cheesecake was absolutely divine!

I once had a dish called "American Paella" in United International First Class. It was very dry and contained a piece of chicken that was as hard as a rock. No noticeable taste, though. In general, I go for the champagne and try to forget the rest. The only decent food is what is served cold -- salads, cold cuts, etc. It's best not even to try the rest.

Earlier this year I fly United from LAS-ORD in coach. They served pizza. It was the most disgusting pizza I ever had. I asked for hot tea....it was so cold that, thinking back, I can only assume that the attendant understood iced tea.
Tomorrow I fly United YYZ-ORD-LHR in coach. I hope that my meal tomorrow will be edible.
I think I will be missing Air Canada!

UA breakfast in first on SFO-DEN leg yesterday: fresh fruit, french toast, Canadian bacon, all OK; scrambled eggs stuffed into a hollowed out half of a baked potato - just plain odd.
It wasn't as nice as the dinner I had at Cucina Leone tonight (thanks, shadow) but not too bad given the short duration of the flight.
mauld: I actually quite like the jelled mess. Go figure! Being mildly lactose intolerant, I prefer just about anything to those ubiquitous ice cream sundaes.

Most airline meals are either hit or miss.
On several lunch flights on UA: I had the most incredible and immense chicken salad with very fresh croutons (Which I eat like potato Crisps!) They were good.
I always try to get into business or First to get a decent meal... and those great cheesecakes, cookies and Ben & Jerry Ice Cream Sundaes (Sorry it's not Blue Bell!)
Some of the coach meals are frightening. Occassionally they'll have something edible (like the beef burrito on CO for lunch.)
The best snack food: Pepperidge Farm Goldfishes which can replace peanuts anyday for me!

I've always wondered about those hot breakfast meals that serve on a lot of the UK doemstic flights. Everytime i take the BA shuttle from LHR to GLA. the plane is all coach, but they serve a hot breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, tomatoes, etc. Sometimes the food is great sometime, not - but it just seems so like such a wonderful effort to serve that on an 1 1/2 hr flight.
I've also flown on flights with British Midland and another ( AIR UK ?), food not as good, but still a full hot breakfast. Just curious, I usually take a roundtrip from London to Scotland once or twice a year, and I'm still surprised witht at hot breakfast

I would second the notion that the meals are hit or miss. I have had some really well prepared meals like the filet on UA one time where I could have closed my eyes and thought I was at Ruth's Chris.
Well ok, maybe not Ruth's Chris but it was really good. And then there is last week where I had the chicken that I could have bounced on the floor.
Then again, I don't fly expecting much from the meals department considering how far in advance everything is prepared, not to mention they have to keep it warm further cooking it. Just give me my meal choice and make it halfway decent.

It's Hawaiian meal month in August on United... and last night, I had a Chicken breast in a fruity sauce that was actually pretty good. I think it was from a guy named Sam Choy.
Came with nice white rice (a little overdone) that had macadamia nuts in it.
Why they serve hawaiian meals SEA-LAX is beyond me... they must have the Italian Beef LAX-HNL.
