Fornalutx

7 Attachment(s)
Fornalutx is one of the most famous mountain villages on Mallorca. Like most of them it´s quite charming, but not as great as you could anticipate after the description in your travel guide. In the village was some kind of festival, so the town center was quite busy with TV-teams etc. Didn´t really understand what´s going on, couldn’t see anything what´s justify a TV-report. After I found a parking-space I explored the village. Over all nice, but can´t really understand the hype....

LOL. I just Googled her, when Mrs. SFO was not around. We all have to make a living somehow. ;)
She does seem to have quite a following in Mallorca.

Sa Calobra

44 Attachment(s)
Sa Calobra is a small village and it´s nothing to write home about! Why is it one of the most famous sights on Mallorca? Because the road to it offers some of the most beautiful views on Mallorca and it´s near the mouth of Canyon de Torrent Pareis. Also you can reach Calu Tuent via a separate serpentine road.
First you must know, that the road like most serpentine roads on Mallorca is very popular among cyclists. While some drive on the right, many drive ALWAYS in parallel (often incredible slow), in the middle of the road etc. It´s a miracle that you doesn´t find a cross all 5 meters with “stupid cyclist” and a date on it. Perhaps they only forbid to set up crosses for killed cyclists....
Attachment 9598

On the road you find some really nice view points.

Anyone needs a new car? I´m sure you can negotiate a good deal and it doesn´t seem to be too much work. But only self-collection!

They translated slippery with “schlüpfrig”. Schlüpfrig has a sexual touch in German, like obscene.

Finally I reached Sa Calobra, were you can left your car on a fee-paying parking space. Also you see the coaches which bring all the tourists.... The bay is full of self-catering restaurants (didn´t take pictures) and it reeks of old grease. Not so nice.....

Those views around Sa Calobra are gorgeous. OK, definitely need to visit Mallorca, in spite of the infestation of stupid cyclists. Yeah, let's ride parallel and block the lane. And they wonder why people run them over.

Mallorca has the reputation of cheap, mass-tourism area, not at all attractive for my needs. I've heard how beautiful and classy it is away from the tourist centers but I've never really heard any details on the different side. It really is a lovely island with lots of areas still unspoiled. Thank you for this entertaining report!

Thanks! Yeah, it has this reputation but it has much more to offer, Indeed it´s really expensive, in high seasons they claim nearly 4 figure sums for something decent.

I will show some more from the other side, so far it was only the second day;)

Another spiritual centre of Mallorca is Puig de Randa near Algaida. It´s a mountain with 3 monasteries on it. You reach the peak again over serpentine road with some cyclists.

Coves del Drac

73 Attachment(s)
Mallorca has many coves and especially some of the most fascinating stalactite caves. The most famous are Coves del Drac near Portocristo. You find the biggest underground lake in Europe inside.
When you reach the site you learn at the moment, that you are in the middle of tourist-Mallorca. In the high-season you wait easily a few hours for a tour (book in advance via internet!). I got a timed ticket for the next tour which came 15 €. At the entrance some busses brought groups of tourists.
From the entrance you enjoy a nice view over the ocean.
Attachment 10048

Inside the cave you fast see impressive formations of dripstones. By viewing some of the pictures you can imagine how romantic the visit is with only few other people on the (self-guided) tour.

After a while we reached the lake. On the lake they offer a classical-concert. How romantic and beautiful. 3 boats come in and an orchestra plays 3 music pieces. Great art and culture. All my attempts to do pictures failed due the bad light, but I did some videos. They impressively demonstrate the situation.

After this epic piece of art you can choose to do a boat-tour over the lake or walk. I decided to leave the cave this century and walked.
Attachment 10087

The cave is beautiful and a must see. I woudn´t need the theatre.....
