Mallorca has the reputation of cheap, mass-tourism area, not at all attractive for my needs. I've heard how beautiful and classy it is away from the tourist centers but I've never really heard any details on the different side. It really is a lovely island with lots of areas still unspoiled. Thank you for this entertaining report!

Same here. I probably blew if off given how they advertise the same but frankly, there is appears to be a lot of fantastic things to see that I probably shot myself in the foot by blowing it off when I was living in Sweden many years ago...and when it was much cheaper to get there....

Palma - Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró
25 Attachment(s)
I really like art, especially if it´s “nice art”. It means I value a Memling or Rembrandt, but who likes to have tortured people in the living room. Miró is one of the artists you can hang in your living room (a copy of course) without hesitation.
Miró lived on Mallorca for several years and when he died he left his house and many works to a foundation. Now you can visit his ateliers and a new built museum. Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró is located outside of Palma in a relative shabby neighbourhood (you´ll see later). After you entered the gate you see some Miró-sculptures which were models. Attachment 10775 A group is already waiting in front of the entrance (mostly pensioner German teachers I guess). Attachment 10776 The main building offers many works of Miró. Castell d´Alaró

Castell d´Alaró is located on Puig d´Alaró. Half the way you “may” drive on a serpentine road. At a tavern and farm you can park and walk the rest.
Attachment 10834 The castle in the high: Attachment 10835 It´s a 45 minutes’ walk. I think it possible to drive with your rental car, but woudn´t do with my own.... One of the popular tourists-spots is Alcúdia. It´s highlight is the town wall and a Roman archaeological site.
After parking the car I started at the archaeological site. It´s not one of the most famous in the world but quite nice. Also a picturesque town is Pollença. The town itself houses many restaurants and cafes, I also found a great deli (who ask why I had 2 checked bags, 2 carry-on bags and still overweight?).

Cap de Formentor
37 Attachment(s)
After my second day I thought Sa Calobra is the nicest road on Mallorca. Now I´m not so sure any more, especially after my trip to Cap de Formentor. Not so nice is the fact, that the street was build during the civil war by forced labourers and prisoners of war.
After round about 5 kilometres drive with many great views and even more cyclists I reached Mirador es Colomer. Unfortunately the whole parking space including parts of the street were full with cars and busses. So I decided to drive left on a dead end road to Talaia d´Albercutx. I found a nice parking space here. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7095/...b1717494_c.jpg Even at the beginning the views are incredible: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7399/...91395b00_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7486/...c4769f7c_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7676/...b42c7262_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/...6c9e64e6_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7538/...d0fe561f_c.jpg The place itself is an old watchtower which is surrounded by some abandomed houses. This houses are the dormitories of the forced labourers and prisoners of war who had to build the street. I recently read this place was also used by the “Legion Condor”. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7382/...ce2ba089_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7651/...160ca67c_c.jpg The watch tower: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7006/...41f52d89_c.jpg Beautiful views: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7492/...d5e50842_c.jpg On this picture you can see a landing site. Not sure, if it´s still in military use, but it seems to be in a good state. There shall also be some buildings for officers, but I couldn’t spot them. On one forum I read that it is a direction finder of the airport Palma de Mallorca. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7373/...3ce4af64_c.jpg At the tower: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7144/...ef3089be_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/...04fa8d57_c.jpg I did 2 videos to show the panorama: After my way back I had to learn, that just more cars and busses arrived and I decided to drive directly to Cap Formentor. Already about hundred meters before the actual cap the street was full of parking cars (of course forbidden). I decided to try my luck and drove further. At the lighthouse were a few several parking spaces....... The lighthouse houses a self-catering restaurant. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7405/...a0839fd1_c.jpg Goat greets guests: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7753/...d5910187_c.jpg The views from the Cap are nice but I found the views from the watch-tower and later Mirador es Colomer more impressive. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7700/...5179ddc6_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7679/...dc807673_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/...a678952c_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7184/...95375551_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7053/...9a9b548a_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7455/...dc5049bc_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7691/...cd2a2332_c.jpg On my way back I finally found (after some complications) a more or less legal parking space at Mirador es Colomer. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7674/...8c6608da_c.jpg You can see the watch-tower at Talaia d`Albercutx: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7521/...daa9b31e_c.jpg It´s a short walk to different small viewpoints with impressive prospects. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7191/...9d704e51_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7562/...04d343c8_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/...400c8c9d_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7138/...cd1b7447_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7722/...4592017b_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7301/...3114207a_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7673/...40aafcfe_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7662/...a797afba_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7130/...45fac331_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7396/...f314cfbf_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7590/...40b2d12a_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7365/...020762fc_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7655/...592c204c_c.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7449/...6a9fa39b_c.jpg Some people call it the ultimate proof of love..... https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7655/...592c204c_c.jpg I call it tired of life or simply incredibly stupid.... https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7295/...8abcf6a6_c.jpg |

Els Calderes

Els Calderes is a farmstead whose history is documented till the 13th century. It was adapted in the 18th century and is a good example for the live of the Mallorcan nobility.
After I entered I was greeted by this nice guy. Attachment 12026 I hate to see dogs on chains! He was very happy as I talked to him and enjoyed some cuddles. He doesn´t agree that I continued my visit as he thought he would deserve all my attention for the rest of the day.
