Checked baggage question
I have a return flight this fall, HNL - MSP - ALO, where NWA has just cancelled the morning flight to ALO. Now the only option is a 14 hour layover in MSP before an evening flight to ALO.
With that long a layover I'm thinking of just renting a car at MSP and driving home (4 hour drive). My question is, what will become of my checked luggage? Will it continue on to ALO? Or is there any way to get it off the plane at MSP?
Thanks.

Ask the check-in agent to "short check" your bags to MSP. This happens all the time. You don't need a reason, though the agent may ask why as a way of making conversation. Doesn't matter what you say - having to get something out of them, or swap reading material, at MSP is fine.
If you decide at the last minute to continue flying your ticketed itinerary, you'll have to go landside to get your bags, re-check them, and re-enter via security. With 14 hours you're unlikely to want to do that and it wouldn't be a problem in any case, but people contemplating this strategy with shorter connections should keep this in mind as it could cause them to miss the connection.

It's also possible to re-book the ticket to cancel MSP-ALO without change fees, as NW changed the schedule.
Perhaps also there's a better routing. I found one that has the main layover in Portland (7 hours) with 1h40 layover in MSP.
